BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams have each clinched a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs beginning this weekend. With both standings still in limbo, the Huskies travel to East Stroudsburg University for the final game of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 27 to determine where they will fit in the playoff standings. Tipoff for the women's game at Koehler Fieldhouse is set for 6 p.m., with the men's game following at 8 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Jim Doyle and Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at
www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.
WOMEN
MATCHUP: The Huskies are on a five-game winning streak and enter the final game of the regular season tied with Millersville for the lead in the Eastern Division. With a win, BU would clinch a first round bye in the PSAC tournament. The Millersville-Shippensburg game Wednesday night will further decide the final PSAC East standings. ESU will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament. During the seven-game winning streak against ESU, BU has won by an average margin of 26.43 points including a 43-point win at home earlier this season. BU has not lost to ESU since dropping both matchups of the 2008-09 season.
BU'S LAST TIME OUT: The four senior members of the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day by combining for 41 points in a 75-53 victory over Kutztown.
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area), the senior captain, led the way for the Huskies with her career-high 15 points, while also dishing out five assists.
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) added 14 points, while grabbing seven boards and also recording five assists.
Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) also hit double-digits with 12 points, while
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored seven and
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) five for Bloomsburg.
ESU'S LAST TIME OUT: East Stroudsburg stayed within striking distance the entire way, but West Chester closed the game on a 14-5 run to come away with a 59-45 win. Freshman center Michelle Boggs tied her career-high with 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Warriors, with sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki adding nine points, four rebounds and three assists and junior guard Halie Cintron scoring seven points off the bench, all in the first half. Senior forward Fayola Moise had four points and seven rebounds.
MEN
MATCHUP: The Huskies clinched a spot in the PSAC tournament with their overtime victory over Kutztown on senior day. With a win, Bloomsburg would be the No. 4 seed in the East and host a first round game on Saturday, Mar. 2. With a loss, BU could finish as the No. 4, 5, or 6 seed. ESU is tied for the Eastern lead with West Chester after dropping three in a row.
BU'S LAST TIME OUT: Bloomsburg clinched a berth in the PSAC playoffs with an 85-80 overtime win over Kutztown. The Huskies were led by a career-high 34 points by
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown). Christmas scored 25 of his points in the second half and overtime and scored the last five points of the game for the Huskies. Christmas finished the day with a double-double, scoring 34 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while going 15-of-18 from the foul line.
Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville) also had a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards.
ESU'S LAST TIME OUT: West Chester came away with an 83-76 win over 10th-ranked East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon. Whis Grant scored 22 points and senior forward Terrance King had 20 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and the 15th of his career, but the Warriors dropped their third straight after a school record-tying 14-game winning streak since December 19 which ended last Saturday at Shippensburg.
