Men’s Basketball Travels to Mansfield for PSAC First Round Game

BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team is making its second consecutive trip to the postseason and will aim for the programs first playoff win since 2002 when it takes on Mansfield University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Round playoff game on Saturday, Mar. 2 at Decker Gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Jim Doyle and Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens, while BU and all students from PSAC schools will be admitted free with valid ID.

The Huskies (8-18) enter the tournament as the fifth seed with six wins in conference play.  The Mountaineers (9-17) ended the season on a three-game winning streak to earn seven PSAC victories and the fourth seed out of the Eastern Division in the field. The winner of Saturday's first round game will take on East Stroudsburg on Tuesday, Mar. 5 at ESU.

Bloomsburg is making its second consecutive trip to the playoffs after breaking an 11-year draught last season with its co-Eastern Division title. The teams split its regular season games this season with each team winning on the road.

At Mansfield, Bloomsburg won in overtime, 82-81, off Jimel Calliste (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson Campus)'s game-winning jumper in the final seconds. BU has won the last two meetings at Decker Gymnasium, and will be searching for its 100th victory over Mansfield in program history.

Bloomsburg is 1-1 against Mansfield in the PSAC playoffs. It won 80-61 in the 2001 quarterfinals, and lost 61-54 in the 1984 championship game. BU is making its 19th trip to the PSAC tournament, and holds an overall record of 20-17 (.541).

With adding an extra playoff round this year, BU will play in its first 'First Round' game, but enters the tournament with a quarterfinal record of 13-2 (.867), and a playoff-opening-game record of 13-5 (.722). BU's last playoff victory was in the 2002 PSAC quarterfinals vs. West Chester, 60-54.

Junior guard Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) is Bloomsburg's leading scorer and will need to have a strong shooting day from three-point range in his second career playoff game. Christmas is second in the PSAC in three-pointers per game (2.7), seventh in three-point percentage (.351), and ninth in scoring (16.1).

As a team, the Huskies average 68.7 points per game while allowing 78.1, the second highest total in the PSAC. One of their strengths this season has come from three-point range. They are second in the PSAC at 6.9 three-pointers per game, but will be without their top long range shooter in Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield).

Looking at the two matchups with Mansfield earlier this season, six Huskies hold higher scoring averages than their regular season totals. Freshman forward and this week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville) (16.5 ppg), sophomore guard Kendal Smith (Waldorf, MD/Thomas Stone) (10.0), senior guard Daniel Kusnyer (Wexford/Hillsborough CC) (9.0), junior center Moustapha Noumbissi (Upper Darby/Delaware County Christian School) (6.0), junior forward Armand Leaks (Philadelphia/The Shipley School) (5.5), and sophomore guard Jimel Calliste (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson Campus) (5.0) are all averaging over their season average in scoring in BU's two games against Mansfield.

Mansfield is led by sophomore forward Joe Bell. He is averaging 17.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, however, the Huskies held Bell under his season average in both meetings this season at 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Chuck Harper (12.2), Charles Becoats (12.0), and Brad Williams (11.0) also average double figures for the Mountaineers.
