BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team enters the second half of its divisional slate Wednesday night and will look for some consistency against Millersville University in the first of two straight home games.
The Huskies (5-14, 3-12 PSAC) host the Marauders (15-6, 11-4) on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Nelson Field House in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Jim Doyle and Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at
www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.
Bloomsburg is coming off a 71-64 loss at Kutztown last Saturday in which it got off to a slow defensive start that allowed Kutztown to shoot the ball very well and get out to a lead that the Huskies could not overcome. Despite suffering their third straight loss, the Huskies had some bright moments that will need to be maximized in order to earn a victory against a physical Millersville team.
Millersville won the first matchup this season on its home floor, 62-49, but the Huskies have won the last four games against Millersville at Nelson Field House dating back to the 2008-09 season. Bloomsburg trailed by just two at halftime in the first meeting, but shot just 25 percent from the floor and were out-scored by Millersville by 11 in the second half.
The Huskies have gone through some great adversity throughout their season thus far which has resulted in a plethora of unexpected starting lineups. Through 19 games, Bloomsburg has had eight different starting lineups, and 12 of its 14 players have started at least one game.
Daniel Kusnyer (Wexford/Hillsborough CC) and
Armand Leaks (Philadelphia/The Shipley School) are the only players who have played in all 19 games for Bloomsburg.
One player Bloomsburg was happy to welcome back on Saturday was junior guard
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown). After missing three games due to injury, Christmas drained five three-pointers for 16 points and was Bloomsburg's top offensive option.
For the season, Christmas is 11th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Christmas' 2.8 three-pointers per game lead the PSAC, and his 36.7 percent from beyond the arc ranks fifth in the PSAC. He has also made a three-pointer in 26 consecutive games played.
Sophomore guard
Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield) has turned into an excellent complement to Christmas from beyond the arc. Sheetz has made a three-pointer in each of his 10 games started this season and is second on the team in three-pointers made (31) and leads the team in three-point percentage (.456). Sheetz is averaging 10.5 points per game for fourth on the team.
Andrew Morgan (New Brunswick, NJ/St. Joseph's) started the first game of his career and
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) returned to the starting lineup Saturday and both players will need to have effective games at the point guard and power forward positions, respectively, to give Bloomsburg a shot at a potential upset over the Marauders.
On Saturday, the Marauders trailed Mansfield by 10 at halftime but roared back with a 50-point second half to win 75-68. Anthony Coleman led four Marauders in double figures with 19 points, giving him at least 10 in seven of his last nine games. Kemar Williams posted career-highs in points (12) and assists (5). Larry Grant added 11, and Jaymes Miller scored 10 on 5-of-6 shooting.
For the season, Obade has become one of the most powerful inside presences in all of Division II. He averages 12.5 points along with a PSAC-leading 11.7 rebounds per game which rate second in Division II. Also averaging double figures for Millersville are Grant (14.3) and Coleman (11.5).
After its game with Millersville, Bloomsburg remains at home to play Cheyney University on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Nelson Field House beginning at 3 p.m.
