BLOOMSBURG – Junior forward
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) scored his 1,000th career point and combined for 57 points with fellow junior
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) in the Bloomsburg University men's basketball teams' 80-64 victory over Cheyney University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at Nelson Field House.
Jordan notched his fifth double-double of the season with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and was able to score in style in the second half. Jordan slammed home a dunk over a Cheyney defender that brought fans at Nelson Field House to their feet, and also slammed home a breakaway dunk for his 1,000th point at the 9:19 mark of the second half.
Jordan is the 27th player in Bloomsburg to topple the 1,000-point mark.
Christmas went stride-for-stride with Jordan on his way to a season-high-tying 29 points. The duo combined to shoot 24-for-27 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line, and their 57 points mark the highest output by a Bloomsburg duo in the last 10 years dating back through the 2002-03 season.
“To play well, we need those guys to score the basketball,” Bloomsburg head coach
John Sanow said of Jordan and Christmas. “It not only gives them confidence, but it gives our whole team confidence. Those two guys are very capable of having the game they had tonight, and when they do, we are capable of putting some quality minutes of basketball out on the floor.”
The 16-point win was the largest of the season for the Huskies, (7-14, 5-12 PSAC) as they avenged a loss to Cheyney (9-12, 7-10) from earlier this season.
“This was just a good, clean game for us,” Sanow said. “We got to the foul line, we didn't foul them a lot, and we did the needed things to win basketball games.”
The teams traded buckets in the opening two minutes. Bloomsburg's
Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield) hit a pair of three-pointers to give the Huskies a 6-4 lead at the 18:01 mark of the first half, and the Huskies held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Sheetz finished with eight points, all of which came in the first half. He made both of his three-point and free throw attempts, and has made 17 consecutive free throws dating back to Jan. 30 against East Stroudsburg.
Including the Sheetz three to give the Huskies a 6-4 advantage, Bloomsburg put together an 11-2 run through the first six minutes of play to build an eight-point, 14-6 lead at the 14:43 mark.
Leading 19-13 later in the half, Bloomsburg used five different scorers to build a 14-3 run to open the game to a 17-point, 33-16 lead with under two minutes to play in the half. Cheyney closed the half on a 6-0 run as the Huskies led 34-24 at halftime.
Bloomsburg's 10-point lead at halftime was only the third time this season that the Huskies led at intermission, and first since Jan. 11 against Lock Haven.
“I thought we got off to a great start with Zach's (
Sheetz) two three's and not fouling them in the paint,” Sanow said of Bloomsburg's first half effort. “Defensively, we were playing pretty solid and we weren't fouling which we were doing in past games.”
Cheyney's Brandon Norfleet hit back-to-back three-pointers on the Wolves' first two possessions of the second half to trim the Bloomsburg lead to six. Broken up by a Christmas three-pointer and a pair of Jordan free throws, Cheyney opened the second half on a 12-5 run to bring the game to three at 39-36 with 17:00 to play.
The three-point margin was as close as Cheyney would get to staging a comeback as the Huskies showed their poise on their home floor. Bloomsburg responded with a quick 5-0 run capped with Jordan's slam for 1,000 points to take its lead back to double digits at 56-46 with 9:19 to play.
“Dontahe's worked to get to this point, and back to being an impact player for this program,” Sanow said. “I thought it was good for him to achieve this on his home floor and in a game that we needed to win.”
The final six minutes belonged the Huskies as they put together a 13-3 run to hold a game-high, 19-point lead at 77-58 with 2:25 to play. Eight of Bloomsburg's 13 points in the run came from the free throw line.
The Huskies not only executed their game plan of getting to the free throw line, they shot an impressive 33-for-41 (80.5 percent) from the charity stripe. It is a season-high for free throws made for Bloomsburg and the most since it made 32 in the 2002-03 season against Lycoming.
Cheyney finished with three players in double figures led by Rashaad Slappy's 19 on 8-of-17 shooting from the field. He also had a team-high three steals. Norfleet had 17 points and was 5-for-5 at the free throw line, and Deshawn Curtis chipped in 11 points. Jason Sabb, who averages nearly 18 points per game, was held to just five on 2-of-8 shooting.
Bloomsburg now stands alone in fifth place in the East with Kutztown still to play East Stroudsburg on Sunday. Now 2-0 in the second half of Eastern Division play, the Huskies have continued to improve their chances of returning to the postseason for a second consecutive season.
“We feel like we finally have a rotation we can go to every game with some go-to players,” Sanow said. “We've been able to build a rhythm this last week and if we can continue that way, there are some opportunities to build some separation and put ourselves into the playoff picture.”
The Huskies return to action for the first of two straight road games on Wednesday, Feb. 13 against Shippensburg. Tipoff at Heiges Field House is set for 8 p.m.
