MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Bloomsburg's
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) pitched a complete game in the opener and
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) had three hits in the nightcap, but Millersville defended its home field to sweep the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East doubleheader from the Huskies 1-0 and 7-3.
In the opener, Cooperman held the Marauders at bay for 6.2 innings before a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh gave MU a 1-0 win. Cooperman was dominant in the game, allowing just six hits and a walk, while striking out six.
He was outdueled in the game by Millersville's Chris Murphy, who threw a complete game, two-hit shutout. Murphy walked two and struck out five.
The Huskies had a chance in the second inning when
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) reached on an error and
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) walked. A single by
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) singled to left center to load the bases with one out, but Murphy worked out of the jam without any damage.
Baiada also singled in the fifth and was bunted into scoring position before getting stranded at second.
In the seventh, Tyler Orris of Millersville singled with two outs to bring Jeff Heisey home for the game's only run.
Eversole homered and drove in two runs during a three-hit effort in the second game, but five Millersville runs in the first two innings proved too much to overcome.
After a three-run first by the Marauders, Eversole homered down the line in left to cut the deficit to 3-1. But Millersville tacked on a pair of runs in the second to make it 5-1. Zach Stone added a two-run single for the Marauders in the fourth to stretch it to 7-1.
The Huskies fought back in the sixth with two runs to chip the deficit to 7-3.
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) singled with one out and moved to third on a double by
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton). Eversole brought Smith home with a single through the left side that moved Casselberry over to third. Almand knocked in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Casselberry to cross home.
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings.
Sean McCloskey (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) threw 3.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits, two runs, and two walks, while striking out two.
Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) threw a perfect seventh to finish the game.
Jim McDade was credited with the win for Millersville. He threw the first six innings, surrendering five hits and three runs.
Jeremy Musser had three hits.
The Huskies fall to 4-18 overall and 0-8 in the PSAC East, while Millersville improved to 18-8 and 4-0.
Bloomsburg will look to get back in the win column on April 2 at Lock Haven in a single game starting at 3 p.m.
