BELMONT, NC – The Bloomsburg University baseball team overcame an eight-run deficit in the second game of a doubleheader, but Belmont Abbey scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to spoil the split for the Huskies 11-10 Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yards. Bloomsburg fell in the opener 6-0.

GAME ONE

The Huskies (3-6) loaded the bases in the first inning with base hits from Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) and Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) and a walk by Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle). However, with one out, the final two Huskies struck out as no runs crossed the board.

Catcher Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) continued to be a force behind the plate. He wasted no time picking off runners on the base paths as he threw a runner out at second base in the first inning.

Belmont Abbey built its lead with two runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Gabby Amor hit a double to right field with one out, and was knocked in the following at-bat with an RBI single from John Pilla. Pilla went on to score on a failed pickoff attempt by Bloomsburg's Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) to give Belmont Abbey a 2-0 lead through three.

In the fourth, Levi Wright pulled a two-run homer to left field to give Belmont Abbey a 4-0 advantage and end Hunter's day on the mound. It tacked on runs in the fifth and eighth innings as well.

Freshman Matt Jaskolka (Warren/Warren Area) made his season debut for the Huskies on the mound. The right-hander allowed three hits over three innings in relief and allowed one run with a pair of strikeouts.

Hunter picked up the loss for the Huskies, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings.

Bloomsburg tallied seven hits off five different hitters against Belmont Abbey's Cody Stull. Along with Ravel and Casselberry, Jordan Schainholz (Bellefonte/Bellefonte), Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI), and Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) recorded a hit in the opener.

Stull threw 7.2 shutout innings for Belmont Abbey. He tallied three strikeouts and four walks. At the plate, four players had multi-hit games including a 3-for-4 day by leadoff hitter Ian Vasquez, and Pilla.

GAME TWO

After a scoreless first inning, Bloomsburg gave up a five-run second inning to Belmont Abbey. Abbey had four hits in the inning, three of which went for extra bases. It also scored three in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.

The Huskies rallied back with ten unanswered run including a seven-run fifth inning. Smith and Almand got the inning started with back-to-back singles. Sophomore A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) put the Huskies on the board for the first time with an RBI single to right center field to score Smith from second base.

Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) and Ravel also hit RBI singles before an out was recorded in the inning. Belmont Abbey's next pitcher walked in two runs before Baiada drove home the final two of the inning with a single to left center field.

Trailing 8-7 in the sixth, Casselberry gave the Huskies the lead with a two-out, two-RBI single to score Schainholz and Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North). Casselberry scored on a wild pitch later that inning to give Bloomsburg a 10-8 advantage with three outs to play.
