Huskies Split Senior Day Doubleheader with Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Bloomsburg University split a PSAC East doubleheader with visiting Shippensburg on Senior Day at Danny Litwhiler Field, winning the opener 6-2 before the Raiders rebounded for a 4-1 win in game two.

Prior to the day's contests, the Huskies honored its three 2013 seniors, Matthew Dean (Gilbertsville/Boyertown), Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) and Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic).  

Morris took the hill in game one and held the Shippensburg offense in check.  He pitched the first 6.2 innings and scattered eight hits and two walks. Morris allowed just two runs and struck out eight to match his season-high.  

The two teams traded runs to start game.  Michael Douglas led of fthe contest wtih a homer to left, but Bloomsburg answered and tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) singled, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch.  

In the second, Jimmy Spanos got the lead back for Shippensburg in the top of the frame before Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) doubled home Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) to knot the score at 2-2.  

The two teams remained tied until the Huskies broke the game open with a four-run fifth. Smith led off the inning with a single and came home on a double to right center by Eversole for a 3-2 lead.  Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) singled to put runners on the corners and Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI)'s sacrifice fly made it 4-2 with one out.  A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) singled to chase Shippensburg starter Bom Bush from the game and with two outs, Mazza ripped a ground ball up the middle that deflected off reliever Austin Bartley and kicked onto the the right side side of the infield in no man's land. The deflection allowed Casselberry to score from second and put runners on the corners.  Mazza and Stump then executed a double steal for the final run of the inning.

In the seventh, the Raiders put two on with two out and Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) entered the game for the final out and was credited with his second save of the year.  

Mazza and Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) had two hits each for BU.  Eversole added a hit and a walk.

Bush took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out three. Douglas and Spanos each had two hits.

In game two, Pat Kregoloh had a homer and two doubles at the plate and threw a complete game on the mound as Bloomsburg fell 4-1.

He doubled and scored in the second and after an BU error extended the third inning, he hit a two run blast to right. The Raiders added insurance in the sixth on a homer by Simon Beloff to make it 4-0.  

The Huskies answered back in the seventh when Eversole led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Almand.  Stump drove in Eversole on a fielder's choice, but Bloomsburg could not cut further into the lead.  

In additon to the seventh inning hits from Eversole and Almand, the Huskies got base hits earlier in the contest from Stump and Mazza.  

Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) started and took the loss.  He allowed three runs, one earned, in three innings on five hits and a walk.  He struck out one.  Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) pitched the final four innings of relief, giving up just one run on four hits and a walk.  He retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced.  

The Huskies and Raiders conclude the season series on Sunday, April 14 wtih two games at Shippensburg.  The doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
