SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Bloomsburg University capitalized on several Shippensburg miscues to sweep the Raiders 5-4 and 6-5 in a PSAC East doubleheader.
A total of seven of the Huskies' 11 runs on the afternoon were unearned as BU made Shippensburg pay for each of its four errors.
In game one,
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) threw his third complete game of the season and
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) had three hits.
The Huskies scored in the first inning when
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. The Raiders' first error of the day allowed him to score as Bloomsburg went ahead 1-0.
Baiada led off the second with a base hit and was bunted over to second by
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville). An error and a wild pitch brought Baiada home before
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) doubled home
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) for a 3-0 lead.
After Shippensburg scored a run in the third, Bloomsburg remained ahead 3-1 entering the sixth inning. Baiada led off and doubled to left center and Russell followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Baiada scored on a wild pitch for a 4-1 lead and Mazza singled in another run before the end of the inning for a four-run advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Michael Douglas hit a three-run homer for Shippensburg before Cooperman retired the side to end the game.
Cooperman struck out four and walked two while scattering seven hits. Only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.
In addtiion to three hits in the game, Baiada also scored twice. Mazza had two hits and stole a pair of bases. Almand and Stump each doubled among their two hits.
Shawn Patterson took the loss for the Raiders. He allowed three runs on five hits in four innings. Douglas had three hits for Shippensburg.
Bloomsburg scored six runs in the second inning of the second game and held on for a 6-5 win.
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) led off the frame with a double and scored on an error when Stump tried to bunt him over to third.
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) ripped a single to right and put runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed Stump to score for a 2-0 lead and moved Smith to second. Singles by Baiada and Russell followed and extended the lead to 3-0. A second error by the Raiders in the inning allowed Baiada to cross home plate. RBI doubles by Mazza and
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) drove in runs as the Huskies went ahead 6-0.
Shippensburg scored twice in the fourth and three more times in the fifth to trim the lead to one.
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) entered the game with the two on in the fifth and just one out, but got a pair of key strike outs to end the threat.
He then pitched scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh for his third save of the year. Hill fanned three in 2.2 innings of work out of the bullpen.
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) picked up his team-high fourth win after starting and pitching four innings.
Mazza, Eversole and Casselberry all doubled in the game for Bloomsburg.
Rich Michaud took the loos for the Raiders. He lasted just 1.2 innings and surrendered five runs on five hits. Tyler Shover led SU with two hits and drove in a pair.
The doubleheader sweep gave the Huskies three wins in four tries against the Raiders.
Bloomsburg will look to stay in the win column on April 16 with a non-conference road doubleheader at Indiana (Pa.) on April 16 at 1 p.m. BU returns to PSAC East play with a four-game set against East Stroudsburg on April 19 and 20. The Warriors and Huskies play at Danny Litwhiler on Friday at 1 p.m. before the teams head to ESU on Saturday.
