EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Freshman
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI)'s first home run in a Bloomsburg University uniform could not have come at a better time. He hit a go-ahead grand slam as the Huskies erased a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to win 10-7 in the nightcap of a PSAC East doubleheader at East Stroudsburg. The win gave BU a sweep in the twinbill after a 5-2 victory in the opener.
Bloomsburg's offense has not relied much on the long ball this season, but Almand's game-winning blast capped a three-homer day for the Huskies.
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) hit his first career homer in the opener and
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) smacked a two-run shot earlier in the seventh during BU's comeback in game two.
In game one, Bloomsburg scored four runs in the second inning to break the game open.
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) and
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) had back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, but it was not until
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) drove in Casselberry with two outs that the Huskies got onto the scoreboard. Stump scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 before Russell laid down a bunt single along the third base line knock in Mazza. Almand gave BU a four run lead with a single to score Russell.
Errors by Bloomsburg in the third and fifth innings allowed the Warriors to cut the lead to 4-2.
In the seventh, Russell stretched the Huskies' lead back to three runs when he took Matt Smith over the fence in left.
On the mound,
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) picked up his second win of the year. He scattered nine hits and two walks over 6.1 innings, while striking out two. Both runs he allowed were unearned.
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) relieved Cooperman with one out in the seventh and retired the only two batters he faced for his fourth save.
Russell was 2-for-3 with his RBI bunt single in the second and solo homer in the seventh. He also scored twice. Eversole had a hit and a walk and five other Huskies had a hit in the contest.
ESU's Smith threw a complete game, but took just his second loss of the year. He allowed eight hits and a walk in seven innings. All five runs he allowed were earned and he failed to strike out a batter.
In game two, BU trailed 7-3 heading into the team's final at-bat. The Warriors brought in reliever Keith Moyer, who notched a save versus the Huskies on Sunday, but Bloomsburg did not allow a repeat performance.
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) walked to lead off the the inning and scored when Eversole clubbed a pitch over the left field fence to make it a two-run game. Casselberry then walked, forcing the Warriors to the bullpen again.
Colin Kelly retired the first two BU hitters he faced, but Mazza stroked an infield single to put runners on first and second.
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) walked for Bloomsbur'gs third of four bases on balls of the inning to load the bases. Russell walked to cut the lead to 7-6 and bring up the top of the order. Almand, batting leadoff, hammered a pitch over the fence in left field to complete the Bloomsburg comeback.
The Huskies scored seven runs in the seventh inning on just three hits, but two of the hits were homers that accounted for six runs in the comeback.
Bloomsburg had scored first in the game on an RBI single by Ravel in the third for a 1-0 lead. The Warriors tied the game in the fourth, then took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the fifth.
Mazza and
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) hit run scoring singles in the sixth to trim the lead to 4-3, however, a three-run sixth by East Stroudsburg appeared to put the game away before the Huskies dramatic comeback.
Hill threw a perfect seventh for his fifth save of the year and second of the afternoon.
Almand was 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the game. Mazza turned in a three-hit contest to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Ravel, Casselberry,
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and Russell each had a hit and a walk. All nine players in the starting lineup had a least one base hit for Bloomsburg.
Sean McCloskey (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) benefitted from the offensive outburst for his first win of the year.
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) started and went 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two walks, while striking out four. Only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.
Kelly took the loss for ESU, surrendering four runs on two hits and two walks in the seventh. Eric Forth and Chris Knott each had two-run singles at the plate for the Warriors.
The doubleheader continues a string of 14 games in eight days for the Huskies. Winners of eight of its last 11, Bloomsburg will look to stay hot with a home-and-home set against Indiana (Pa.) on April 23-24. Bloomsburg heads to IUP on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader, with the Crimson Hawks making the return trip on Wednesday.
