BLOOMSBURG, Pa. –
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) drove in four runs in game one and
Gino D'Amato (Hazleton/Hazleton) and
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) combined on a three-hit shutout in the second game as Bloomsburg University swept a doubleheader from visiting Indiana (Pa.) 11-5 and 3-0.
Mazza was 3-for-4 in the opener and finished just a home run short of the cycle. D'Amato, making his first career start, allowed just two hits in six innings in game two before Hill notched his sixth save of the year.
The two victories completed a four-game sweep of the Crimson Hawks and ran BU's win streak to six in a row and was the 12th win in the team's last 15 games.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning of the opener. After IUP took a 2-0 lead, Mazza tied the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the frame.
The Crimson Hawks added a run in the second and held a 3-2 advantage heading to the bottom of the third, when Bloomsburg brought four runs across for a 6-3 lead.
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) led off the inning with a double into right center and moved to third on a bunt single by
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson).
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) followed with a shot that deflected off of IUP pitcher Hunter Bigler's glove for an infield single to score Almand and tie the game. Casselberry singled through the left side of the infield and Mazza through the right side with each hit scoring a run to give BU a 5-3 lead. Casselberry scored during a double play for the final run of the inning.
A wild pitch in the fourth allowed the Huskies'
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) to score, and the Crimson Hawks benefitted from a wild pitch that scored a run in the top of the fifth to make it 7-4 in favor of Bloomsburg.
Mazza tripled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored on a base hit up the middle by
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam). With Stump on second and
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) on first after a walk, Almand singled with two out to knock in Stump for a 9-4 lead.
IUP scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth, but BU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Eversole drew a base on balls to start the inning and moved to third on
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton)'s single through the left side. An RBI groundout by Mazza drove Eversole home and Stump added an RBI double to make it 11-5 when Casselberry crossed home on the play.
Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) picked up his second win of the year with four innings of relief. He allowed two runs on three hits and four walks and struck out one.
Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) started the game and went three innings, striking out three and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits.
In addition to Mazza's hot hitting, Casselberry had a three-hit game, drove in a run, and scored three times. Eversole went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, an RBI, and three runs scored. Stump had two hits and a walk to go along with two RBIs and Almand gave Bloomsburg five players with at least two hits in the contest.
Bigler took the loss for IUP, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks in three innings. He did not strike out a batter. Nolan Schaaf allowed three runs in two innings and Bloomsburg scored twice against reliever Jared Weed in the sixth.
In game two, D'Amato was nearly flawless to pick up his first career win. He allowed just one runner to reach third and just two others into scoring position. After allowing a single in the second inning, the Crimson Hawks did not get another hit until a double by Brett Quiggle to lead off the seventh.
Bloomsburg scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings to account for all the scoring in the game. During the bottom of the second,
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) singled and scored two batters later on a base hit by
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley). Ravel was hit by a pitch in the third, moved up to second on a wild pitch and over to third when Eversole singled. The next batter Mazza executed a safety squeeze to drive in Ravel for a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies added a final insurance run in the sixth when
James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa) doubled and his pinch runner,
Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North), scored after a pair of wild pitches.
The Crimson Hawks threatened in the seventh in when Quiggle led off with a double. Bloomsburg countered with closer
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton), who closed out the game. The lefty's sixth save ties him for third on the single season saves list at Bloomsburg.
Smith was the only player on either team with two hits in the game. Ott reached base via a walk and a double and Ravel was hit by a pitch twice in the game.
