BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg continued its fiery finish to the 2013 season with a record-setting doubleheader sweep of visiting Clarion. The Huskies set single game marks for runs scored, hits and runs batted in during a 30-2 victory in the opener, then defeated the Golden Eagles 11-1 in the night cap.
BU topped the previous mark of 25 runs scored set in 1952 in a win over Harsprung University (now Binghamton University). The team's 28-run margin of victory was also a school record. Totals of 29 hits and 28 RBIs also set new program bests.
The offensive outburst also etched itself into the PSAC record books. The team's RBI total is the third best effort in the PSAC record book. Bloomsburg's hit total ties for the third most in conference history and its 30 runs are tied for the fourth most.
Bloomsburg finished its season winning 17 of its last 21 contests and won at least 20 games for the third consecutive year.
Playing in their final collegiate games, the opener was highlighted by the efforts of seniors
Matthew Dean (Gilbertsville/Boyertown),
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) and
Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic).
Dean got the start on the mound and threw a complete game, scattering nine hits and a walk. He allowed just two runs, while striking out three. He also entered the lineup midway through the contest and went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three runs batted in his first career at bats.
Eversole went 3-for-5 in the game, doubling twice to go along with his third home run of the year. The catcher knocked in seven runs in the game, the most for a Husky since Chris Husted drove in the same number against Susquehanna on April 17, 2005.
Morris, a starting pitcher by trade, pinch hit in the fifth and stayed in the game to play second base making his first collegiate appearance in the field. He had an RBI single in his second at bat and was perfect in his only chance defensively.
In all, 15 players had at least one of Bloomsburg's 29 hits in the contest, including 10 players with two or more.
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) went 4-for-6 with two doubles and five runs scored, matching the most runs by a BU player in 2013.
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) was 3-for-3 in the game.
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson),
Jordan Schainholz (Bellefonte/Bellefonte),
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton),
James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa),
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) and
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) had two hits apiece.
Schainholz drove in three runs and Casselberry, Ott, Stump, and Smith all had multi-RBI efforts, as well.
Four Huskies homered in the game. In addition to long balls by Eversole and Dean, Schainholz and Ott came off the bench for their first career home runs.
The Golden Eagles led 1-0 after scoring a run in the top of the first inning before Bloomsburg tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Eversole in the bottom of the inning that drove in Almand.
BU broke the game open with a nine-run second inning that included back-to-back ground rule doubles by Eversole and Casselberry. Three more runs in the third put Bloomsburg ahead 13-2.
Homer runs by Eversole, Ott and Schainholz powered a 10-run fourth inning. Eversole and Ott hit back-to-back homers, while the blasts by Eversole and Schainholz were both three-run shots. Ott and Schainholz were both used as pinch hitters in the inning as the Huskies took a 23-2 lead.
Dean's dinger to center in the fifth drove in two more runs to tie the school's single game scoring record. The mark fell the next inning when Ott ripped a bases loaded single for the Huskies' 26th run of the game. Four more runs came home before the inning ended for the 30-2 final score.
Sam Skraba took the loss for Clarion, allowing seven runs in 1.2 innings on seven hits as the first of five pitchers for the Golden Eagles. Bill Hasson had two hits.
While several pitchers came up with offensive performances for Bloomsburg in game one, it was a hitter who finished game two on the mound. Eversole moved to pitcher from designated hitter in the seventh and tossed a scoreless inning, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Schainholz led the offense, homering for the second straight game and driving in five runs with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
Almand hit a leadoff homer to start a four-run first inning that also featured a three-run bomb by Schainholz.
The Huskies pushed two more runs home in the third and another in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
A two-run single by Ott in the sixth fueled a four-run inning that put BU on top 11-1.
Freshman hurler
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) notched his first career victory with a strong effort on the mound. He struck out five Golden Eagles in four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.
Jack Fritz (West Chester/Rustin) allowed a run on two hits over two innings of relief and struck out three before giving way to Eversole in the seventh.
Ott matched Schainholz's three hits in the game, doubled twice, scored three times, and drove in a pair.
Caleb McGary threw a complete game for Clarion, surrendering 11 runs, four earned.
The Golden Eagles' only run scored on a solo shot by Drew Pirritano in the sixth inning.
Eversole finished with 17 doubles for the season and 36 in his career. His season total is tied for the fifth best mark in BU history, while his career tally ties for tenth.
Bloomsburg scored 24 runs in a games earlier this year against Philadelphia, giving the Huskies two of the three highest scoring games in school history this season.
