KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Bloomsburg nearly knocked off No. 13 Kutztown in the opener of a PSAC East doubleheader before a walk off base hit gave the Golden Bears an 11-10 victory.  KU also won the nightcap by a final score of 11-4.

After the two teams traded first inning runs in the opener, the Huskies scored four runs with two outs in the second inning to jump out to a 4-1 lead.  Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) ripped a bases loaded to centerfield and later scored on an RBI double by Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley)

Kutztown cut the lead to two in the bottom of the inning before the Huskies plated three more runners in the third.  With Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) on third after leading off the inning with a walk, Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) successfully executed a suicide squeeze.  An error and wild pitch would bring runs home later in the frame as the Huskies went up 8-2.

The Golden Bears answered back with a five-run inning in the bottom of the third to pull to within 8-7.  Single runs by KU in the bottom of the fourth and fifth put Bloomsburg behind 9-8 entering the sixth inning.

Eversole led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a single by Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton).  After a pitching change, Almand singled to third, driving in Eversole to tie the game. James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa) reclaimed the lead for the Huskies with an RBI single to left that brought Almand home for a 10-9 lead.

Kutztown scored once in the sixth and a walk off, two-out single by Ricky Gorrell in the seventh gave the Golden Bears an 11-10 win.

Eversole reached base in all five of his plate appearances in the game with a pair of doubles and three walks.  Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) had two hits and a walk, while Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) singled twice and stole a base.

Sean McCloskey (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) took the loss in relief for BU.

Billy Felo threw two thirds of an inning for the win for Kutztown.  Thomas Romano, who scored the winning run, had three hits.

In game two, Bloomsburg led 4-2 before the Golden Bears erupted for nine combined runs in the third and fourth innings for an 11-4 win to pick up the sweep.

KU scored twice in the first inning before Bloomsburg answered back.  A wild pitch brought run home to make it a 2-1 game after the second inning.  In the third, Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single Eversole.  Almand later singled in Eversole and Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) added a run scoring single before the inning was over for a 4-1 advantage.

The lead did not stand long, however, as the Golden Bears broke the game open during the next two innings.

Casselberry had three hits for BU, while Eversole, Almand and Mazza had two apiece.  Both Almand and Mazza also walked to reach base three times in the contest.

Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing nine earned runs in three innings.

Colin Holmes was credited with the win, allowing four runs in five innings.  John Dockins had three hits.

The Huskies and Golden Bears wrap up the four-game season series on Saturday, April 6 with a doubleheader at BU at 1 p.m.  Bloomsburg will be hosting the PRSSA Best Buddies Day with a pregame ceremony scheduled for noon.  The Huskies are also home for a non-conference twinbill on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m. at Danny Litwhiler Field.
