BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg's
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) went 6-for-8 with a grand slam, two doubles and 10 runs batted in as the Huskies swept a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Philadelphia University by scores of 13-4 and 11-6.
He was 2-for-4 with six RBIs in the opener, then went 4-for-4 and drove in four in the nightcap. The six RBIs in the first game were the most for a BU player since
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) knocked in six against West Chester on April 27 of last season.
In game one, the Rams scored twice in the first inning before Bloomsburg exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the game – all with two outs.
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) doubled to left center and both
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) walked to load the bases. A fielding error allowed the first run to score before Baiada crushed a pitch over the wall in left for a grand slam and his second homer of the season.
The Huskies mounted another two-out rally in the second to extend the lead to 7-3. Stump and
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) had run scoring singles in the frame.
After a scoreless top half of the third by Philadelphia, BU kept the pressure on in the bottom half by scoring two more runs for a 9-3 lead.
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) led off the single and scored on an RBI double by
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley). Eversole later scored on a sacrifice fly by Casselberry.
The Rams shaved a run off the Husky lead in the sixth before BU scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach. Ravel and Casselberry singled to lead off the inning. Ravel scored on an infield single by Almand to make it 10-4. Back-to-back doubles by Baiada and Mazza brought in the final three runs of the game, including two on Baiada's blast to right center.
Ravel went 3-for-4 in the game, scored twice and stole a base. Casselberry was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double and was hit by a pitch. Almand and Mazza each had two hits. Almand drove in two runs, while Mazza doubled and was hit by a pitch.
Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) picked up his first career win on the mound. He started and went four innings, allowing thre runs on five hits and struck out four.
Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) picked up the three-inning save in relief, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out one.
Stephen Uhlak threw a complete game for the Rams and took the loss. Shane Yoshiyama and Jordan Force each had two hits.
The second game started much like the first, with Bloomsburg answering after Philadelphia scored in the first inning. Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first, A Smith double, Casselberry hit by pitch and a single by Stump loaded the bases with one out. Almand stroked a sac fly to left to tie the game. Baiada followed and gave BU a 2-1 lead with an RBI double down the line in left.
The Huskies went on to score in each of the next four innings, as well.
A sac fly by Smith scored
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) to make it 3-1 after two innings. In the third, Almand reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Baiada. A single by Mazza brought Almand home and Baiada later scored on an error for a 5-1 advantage.
Casselberry walked to lead off the fourth before Baiada doubled him in for a 6-1 lead.
After Philadelphia scored twice in the top of the fifth, the Huskies removed any doubt in the bottom of the inning with a five-run inning. Smith doubled in a pair of runs with a shot to left that scored
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and Ravel. Smith later scored on a rare play where the throw back to the pitcher from the catcher got away to make it 9-3. Baiada capped the scoring with a two run single through the left side of the infield that knocked in Almand and Casselberry.
Philadelphia rallied for three runs in the seventh, but it was not enough.
In addition to Baiada's first career four-hit game, Smith was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Russell also went 2-for-3. Casselberry was 0-for-1, but walked and was hit by a pitch twice.
Matt Jasolka went 4.2 innings to start the game for his first career win. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks and struck out one batter.
Matthew Dean (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) earned the save with 2.1 innings of relief. Dean surrendered three runs, one earned on four hits and a walk and struck out three.
Rob Spragis took the loss for the Rams, surrendering six runs in four innings on eight hits and a pair of walks. Rick Reigner, Ken McCormick and Axel Rivera all had two hits for Philadelphia.
The 13 runs scored by the Huskies in the opener are the most by the team this season and the 11 in game two would have matched the previous best for the season.
Bloomsburg will look to stay in the win column on Tuesday, April 9 when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Rams in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
