Box Score HTML Box Score

PHILADELPHIA –Bloomsburg University's Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) drove in six and Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) reached base six times as BU came up just one run short of a 61-year old school record in a 24-6 win at Philadelphia University.

The team's 24 runs were just one less than the 25 the team scored in a contest in 1952 against Harpur College (now Binghamton University).

Almand became the second BU freshman in the last three games to drive in six runs against the Rams. He was one of three BU players with three hits as the team matched its season-high with 20. Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) also had three base hits in the contest.

Ravel reached base six times in the game with two hits, a pair of walks and he was hit by a pair of pitches.

With 48 runs scored in the last three games, it is the biggest offensive output for the Huskies since scoring 49 in the first three games of the 2010 season.

Bloomsburg exploded for five runs in the top of the first. Ravel was hit by a pitch and scored on a base hit by A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam). Smith followed with a single to load the bases and after runs scored on an error and a balk, Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) drove in a run with an RBI single for a 5-0 lead.

The Rams answered quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first, but the Huskies scored three more in the second to pull away. Stump had an RBI single in the inning before Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) homered to left to knock in two more runs and extend the lead to 8-0.

After a scoreless third inning, the Huskies churned out 11 runs over the next three frames to put the game away.

In the fourth, Stump and Smith walked with two outs and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Almand worked a full count and drove a pitch through the middle of the infield for a two-run single and a 10-3 lead. A pitching change followed and Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) singled and Mazza walked to load the bases. The next batter, Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) poked a single through the right side to knock in two more runners.

A fifth inning single by Smith allowed Stump to score before Bloomsburg produced six runs in the sixth inning. Mazza reached on an error to start the inning and Paul Edgar walked before James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa) singled to load the bases. Casselberry doubled the first pitch he saw with one out down the left field line to drive in a pair. Almand and Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) worked a bases loaded walks with two outs to drive in runs to make it 17-5. Mazza made a second trip to bat in the inning and ripped a double to left, scoring two runs for a 14-run lead through six innings.

The Huskies did not score again until pounding out five runs in the ninth. A double by Ott put runners on second and third with one out and Ravel walked to load the bases. Casselberry singled home a run and a ground ball by Jordan Shainholz brought in another to make it 21-6. Almand capped the scoring with a bases clearing double.

Ten different players had hits for the Huskies. Almand was 3-for-6 with a double, a walk, three runs scored and six RBIs. Smith was also 3-for-6 and walked, homered, drove in three and scored four times. Casselberry went 3-for-7, scored three runs, knocked in three and doubled.

Stump reached base four times via two hits and two walks. He scored twice and drove in a pair. Mazza went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a double. Ravel had two hits in three at bats, was hit by two pitches and walked twice. Ott came off the bench to go 2-for-3.

Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) picked up the win in relief. He pitched the fifth inning and allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Jack Fritz (West Chester/Rustin) started and went four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on four this and three walks, while striking out four. Matt Hurd (Orefield/Parkland) pitched perfect sixth and seventh innings, striking out two. Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) finished the game with two innings of work, giving up an unearned run on one hit and a walk and struck out two.

Desmond Drummond took the loss after surrendering 11 runs, nine earned, in 3.2 innings. Jeff Bohus and Jordan Force had two hits apiece.

The Huskies put their three-game win streak on the line when they take on Shippensburg in a PSAC East series on April 12-13. Bloomsburg travels to the Raiders on Friday, with SU returning the trip on Saturday. Both doubleheaders are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
