WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team began its 2014-15 campaign with an exhibition contest at Division I George Washington, falling by an 89-47 decision at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Â
A pair of Huskies worked into double-figure scoring as senior guard
Jon Riles (Philadelphia/Academy of the New Church) paced the offense with 12 points while fellow senior
Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) notched 10 points.
Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) finished with nine points, five rebounds and four steals.
Â
The Huskies closed to within 12-10 at the 13:22 mark of the first half on a 3-pointer from
Ashkan Naderi (Herndon, VA/Herndon) before the Colonials, picked second in the Atlantic 10, embarked on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take control.
Â
Bloomsburg cut to within single digits at 26-17 following a jumper from Riles at the 8:09 mark, but it would be as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the way. George Washington finished the half on a 19-5 sprint and took a 46-22 advantage into intermission and never led by fewer than 26 during the second half.
Â
Six players scored in double figures for George Washington, which reached the NCAA Tournament last year and is ranked No. 35 in the USA Today preseason poll. Preseason All-Atlantic 10 pick Patricio Garino powered the offense with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Â
The Huskies officially open the season with a trip to Penn State Hazleton on Nov. 14 with their first home game the next night against Adelphi at Nelson Field House.
