Baseball Opens Season at Builder Invitational

Builder Invitational Schedule  |  Live Stats for All Games

BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University baseball team opens its 2014 season on Thursday at the Builder Invitational at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va. The Huskies begin their run at the Builder Invitational by taking on the host Apprentice School Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Apprentice School posted a 34-10 record a season ago and scored a 4-3 win over Bloomsburg on opening day of the 2013 campaign. Apprentice School has already began its campaign, starting the year at 4-0.

Bloomsburg plays a pair of games on Friday, first in the early morning game at 9 a.m. vs. Briarcliffe College. The Huskies then play in the nightcap, taking on fellow PSAC East member Lock Haven at 6 p.m.

Saturday will find the Huskies playing in the 6 p.m. game again, this time against Kutztown which finished last year with a 32-16 overall record. Bloomsburg completes its play in Virginia on Sunday with a time and opponent to be determined.

This week's games vs. PSAC East opponents Lock Haven and Kutztown will not count toward conference standings.

The Huskies will try to open the season strong after finishing the 2013 year by winning 17 of 21 games at the end of their slate.

"Traditionally when we open up down South we're more focused on how we play and the approach kids take to their at-bats and in the field and we don't get too hung up on the results," head coach Mike Collins said. "However this year, going to Virginia, winning is important to the team. Based on how last year's early season evolved our guys want to go out and win early. We want to play good baseball and we want to play the game the right way. We want to finish games and win. That's our goal in going down there."
