HAMPTON, Va. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team fell in extra innings vs. Apprentice School, 4-3, Saturday evening as part of the Builder Invitational.
The Huskies (1-2) struck first, plating a run in the second inning by taking advantage of Apprentice School miscues.
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) led off the inning by reaching on an error and later advanced first to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Baiada would cross the plate with the game's first run on a sac fly off the bat of
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick).
Apprentice School (6-2) knotted the score in the fourth, plating a run on a wild pitch.
The game remained tied until the ninth when the Huskies finally broke the deadlock. Baiada advanced pinch runner
Pete Edgar (Hatfield/North Penn), running for
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, to second before a bunt single by
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) loaded the bases with no outs. Kurucz delivered an RBI with a fielder's choice and Bloomsburg added another run off the bat of
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) for the 3-1 lead.
The Builders had some magic in the bottom of the ninth, however. Down to their final out, the Builders tallied a pair of run-scoring doubles to push the game to extra frames.
It was determined that finishing the game with the international tiebreaker rule, as was done when the game originally was played on Thursday, was not permitted by NCAA rules. As such, the game was ruled to be resumed from the top of the 10th inning.
After the Huskies went quietly in the top of the 10th inning, Apprentice School scored game-winner on an unearned run. A throwing error allowed Thomas Richardson to come across with the winning run.
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) earned the start and was spectacular for the Huskies, working eight innings of one-run ball while scattering four hits. Hill walked one and struck out six on the day.
Frain finished with two hits in his Huskies debut including a double while
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) also stroked two hits. Kurucz tallied a pair of RBI as well.
