HAMPTON, Va. – Late inning fireworks powered the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a 9-1 victory over Kutztown as the Building Invitational continued on Saturday night.
Â
All of the offense for Bloomsburg (2-2) came in the final three frames as the Huskies broke open what had been a pitchers' duel. The biggest story of the night was the strength of senior starter
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) on the hill. In his first action of the season, Cooperman (1-0) twirled a complete game gem, scattering seven hits while surrendering one lone unearned run, walked one and struck out nine. Cooperman needed just 108 pitches to complete the game, throwing 73 for strikes.
Â
Kutztown (3-1) struck first for an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and the score remained 1-0 until the seventh when Bloomsburg took the lead.
Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) led off the inning by walking and moved to second on a ground out.
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) singled to put runners on the corners and
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) tied the game with a fielder's choice RBI to plate West.
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) singled and then
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) gave the Huskies the 2-1 edge with his RBI single up the middle after fouling away three pitches in a six-pitch at-bat.
Â
The Huskies added two more runs in the eighth as
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) singled home two runs. Bloomsburg then exploded for five runs after sending eight men to the plate in the ninth.
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) plated two runs with a single to right center for the biggest blow while
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) plated another with a fielder's choice RBI, Frain was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and West finished the scoring by stealing home.
Â
In all, the Huskies pounded out 11 hits with Frain, Ravel, Mazza and
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) all posting two hits apiece.
Â
Kyle Stoudt was the only Kutztown player to truly figure out Cooperman, finishing 4-for-4 to lead the Golden Bears. Starter James Rossi was strong for KU, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while striking out four before the Huskies were able to get to the Golden Bears' bullpen.
Saturday's game did not count toward PSAC East standings.
Â
Bloomsburg finishes its stay in Virginia with a 9 a.m. start against Briarcliffe, which the Huskies defeated 10-1 on Friday with the winner then playing at noon vs. Apprentice School.
