HAMPTON, Va. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team took third-place in the season-opening Builder Invitational after earning a pair of victories on Sunday, 14-1 over Briarcliffe in seven innings during the early morning, before dropping the host Apprentice School, 9-1, in the second game of the day.

The wins allowed the Huskies to return home with a 4-2 record at the conclusion of the weekend.

GAME ONE - Huskies 14, Briarcliffe 1 (7 innings)
The Huskies scored early and often in a 14-1 trouncing of Briarcliffe College (0-5) in the early game.

After Bloomsburg starter Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) retired the Bulldogs in order in the top of the first, the Huskies grabbed a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat. Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) led off with a single, stole second and then moved to third following a groundout. Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) plated Frain with his single through the right side for the game's first run.

Bloomsburg broke the game open in the second. The Huskies scored five runs on five hits in the inning with the scoring starting on an RBI single up the middle from freshman Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) following infield singles from Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale). Frain was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and following an RBI groundout from Casselberry, Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) then brought home two more runs with his run-scoring single.

The Huskies scored twice more in the third with A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) scoring on a wild pitch and Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) delivering an RBI ground out. The runs kept coming in the fourth as the Huskies scored six times on eight hits. Pete Edgar (Hatfield/North Penn) started the inning with an RBI single to open the flood gates before Stump, Muth, James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa) and Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) all added run-scoring hits as well.

The offense was more than enough for Heane who held Briarcliffe without a hit before Gus Mejia finally got the Bulldogs a single with a hit to left in the fifth. An RBI groundout from Daniel Farina in the sixth would score the only run of the game for Briarcliffe.

In all, the Huskies blitzed the Bulldogs with 18 hits in the game shortened due to the 10-run rule. Baiada, Casselberry and Muth all had two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Heane was outstanding on the mound, working six full innings while allowing only two hits and one earned run. He walked one and struck out two. Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out one.

GAME TWO - Huskies 9, Apprentice School 1
The Huskies tallied 10 more hits and picked up another strong pitching performance from starter Matt Jaskolka (Warren/Warren Area) (1-0) in a 9-1 win over Apprentice School (6-3) immediately following their first victory of the day.

Bloomsburg pushed a run across in the second inning to begin the scoring. Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) started things with a one-out single, advancing to second on a ground out. Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) then kept his hot hitting going with a two-out single to left, scoring Smith.

Jaskolka and Apprentice School starter Kyle Clark matched zeroes until the sixth when the Huskies seized control with a five-run inning. Clark lost his control in the inning, walking the bases loaded to force the Builders to make the call to the bullpen with one out and a Husky at every base. A fielder's choice forced out the lead runner at home for the second out, but Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) worked a walk to force home Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton). Muth then delivered the biggest hit of the game with his single through the left side to score two runs before Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) doubled down the left field line to score Mazza. A wild pitch plated Muth and the Huskies ended the inning with a 6-0 lead.

The run support was more than enough for the sophomore Jaskolka who enjoyed perhaps his finest performance for Bloomsburg, earning the victory with six scoreless innings. Jaskolka did not walk a batter and limited the Builders to only three hits while striking out four.

The Builders pushed a run across in the eighth, but Bloomsburg ended any thoughts of a rally with three runs in the top of the ninth. Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) led off with a double and scored following a Builders error. Casselberry stroked a single up the middle for an RBI and Smith added another RBI single to right to finish the scoring.

Redshirt freshman Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall/Whitehall) made his Huskies debut out of the 'pen with two innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out one. Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning of work including a strikeout.

Casselberry went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to cap his hot weekend while Muth finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Smith added two hits and an RBI and Kurucz also registered a pair of hits and an RBI.

The Huskies travel South again next weekend, playing at Barton College in Wilson, N.C. with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday afternoon and a third meeting slated for next Sunday.
