WILSON, N.C. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a doubleheader at Barton College on Saturday afternoon, taking a 6-2 victory in the nightcap after a 4-1 setback in the early game.

The Huskies complete the day's action with a 5-3 overall record while Barton, a member of Conference Carolinas, stands at 5-9. Game one was a nine-inning contest while the second game was seven innings as per Conference Carolinas protocol.

GAME ONE – Barton 4, Bloomsburg 1
Barton started the scoring in the first game of the afternoon, pushing a run across in the home half of the second inning when a batter was struck with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run for the Bulldogs.

The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when a single up the middle from JT Bunce plated Mitchell Wheeler who led off the inning with a single through the right side.

The Bulldogs doubled their advantage with a two-run fifth. Barton picked up five consecutive singles during the frame with RBI hits coming from Wheeler and Snooter Merryman.

Bloomsburg got a run in the top of the seventh on a sac fly off the bat of Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale), but it would be all the Huskies could muster in the contest. Bulldogs starter Kyle Rufer (2-1) stifled the Huskies bats, working seven innings of one-run ball while allowing only five hits. Mike Brienza and Merryman combined to close out the game, each tossing a scoreless inning apiece out of the bullpen.

Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) recorded a pair of doubles to give the Huskies their lone extra base hits. Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) each had stolen bases as well.

Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) (1-1) started and worked seven innings, allowing four runs and one walk while striking out five. Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO – Bloomsburg 6, Barton 2
The Huskies turned things around in the second game, jumping on the Bulldogs early. Mazza doubled with one out and went to third on a single by Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton). Mazza would score the first run of the game on a sac fly from Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) for a 1-0 lead.

Bloomsburg scored again in the second and third innings, pushing two runs in during the second. Mazza doubled down the left field line to score Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) who had singled in the previous at-bat, and Casselberry followed that up with another Huskies two-bagger to score Mazza. In the third, Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) brought in another run with his RBI single to right center to score Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland).

Bloomsburg added two runs of insurance in the fifth. After Barton cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies answered with RBI doubles from Muth and Ravel to stretch the lead.

The offense was more than enough for starter Matt Jaskolka (Warren/Warren Area) who recorded his first career complete game with the Huskies, working all seven innings while surrendering only two runs on six hits. The sophomore also whiffed a career-high nine batters in his second consecutive excellent outing of the young season. During one span from the second through fourth innings, Jaskolka struck out seven of nine batters he faced.

Casselberry, Mazza and Ravel all had two hits while Muth led the offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate including a walk and double.

Barton starter Duncan Everett (0-2) was tagged with the loss after working three innings and allowing four earned runs.

The Huskies and Bulldogs complete their weekend series with a single game scheduled for noon on Sunday.
