WILSON, N.C. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team pounded out 15 hits and received strong pitching from a trio on the mound to take Sunday's rubber game at Barton College, 11-2, and head home with a series victory.
The win moves the Huskies to 6-3 on the year while Barton falls to 5-10.
Bloomsburg seized an early lead, scoring first on a
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) RBI double down the right field line for a 1-0 advantage. An inning later, the Huskies scored twice more thanks to three hits.
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) came through with a single to left, plating both
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) and
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) who had led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
The score remained 3-0 until Barton finally pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Mitchell Wheeler. The Bulldogs threatened for much more by loading the bases, but
Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) relieved starter
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) and shut the door by coaxing a foul out to the catcher and a line out to center to end the rally attempt.
The Huskies blew the game wide open with four runs in the seventh, sending nine men to the plate.
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) led off the inning with a single to left and
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt from Baiada moved the runners up and
Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) walked with two outs to load the bases. A four-pitch walk to
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) forced in a run, setting the stage for pinch hitter
James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa) who drove a pitch back up the middle for a two-run single.
The final two innings saw the Huskies continue to add insurance with two runs scoring on a Barton error in the eighth and two more runs coming home on a Casselberry single to right in the ninth.
Bloomsburg continued its early season trend of strong starting pitching as Hill (1-0) picked up the win with 5.1 innings of two-run ball, striking out three. Heane recorded 2.2 innings of important relief work, holding the Bulldogs scoreless while allowing only two hits with one strikeout.
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning.
Ricky Jernigan (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in four innings after picking up the start for the Bulldogs.
Baiada and Frain led the way offensively with three hits apiece for the Huskies, with Baiada driving in two runs while both players scored twice. Casselberry posted two hits and two RBI while Smith and Ott also drove in two runs apiece. Mazza also stroked two hits with two runs.
Andrew Webster led Barton with three of the Bulldogs' nine hits.
Bloomsburg returns to action next weekend with three games at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn. The Huskies are set for a doubleheader on Saturday before a single game next Sunday.
