BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University baseball team opened up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play by sweeping a doubleheader vs. visiting Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon at a sun-soaked and windy Danny Litwhiler Field.

The Huskies move to 9-7 on the year and 2-0 in PSAC East competition with a 7-1 win in the opener before holding on for an 8-7 triumph in the nightcap. Lock Haven falls to 8-7 overall and 0-2 to begin the conference schedule.

GAME ONE – Huskies 7, Lock Haven 1
Senior starter Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) was outstanding in the first game, and the Huskies used early offense to control the Bald Eagles.

Bloomsburg scored in each of the first three innings, taking a 1-0 lead after one when Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan), who had doubled to lead off and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale), scored on a wild pitch from Lock Haven starter Joe Nestor (2-1).

Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) opened the second inning with a double to left and would later score on an RBI single from Frain. Bloomsburg then broke things open in the third inning, plating three runs on RBI hits from Ravel and Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn).

The early offense was more than enough for Cooperman who scattered four hits in a complete game effort, not allowing an earned run. Cooperman (2-2) did not walk a batter and struck out four, needing only 88 pitches to complete the game.

Bloomsburg picked up two insurance runs in the fifth when Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) singled and later scored on a Bald Eagles throwing error while West brought home another run with a sacrifice fly.

Frain went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI out of the leadoff spot to spark the offense while Ravel had his best day of the season, posting three hits in four at-bats while also scoring three times. No Lock Haven player had more than one hit against Cooperman, with the Bald Eagles' lone extra base hit coming on a fourth inning double from Austin Botts.

GAME TWO – Huskies 8, Lock Haven 7
The Huskies rallied from an early hole, built a large lead and then held on over the final innings to score the sweep.

Lock Haven grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on run-scoring hits from Scott Zuback and Botts.

Bloomsburg cut the deficit in half in the home half of the inning, however. Frain walked to lead off and then stole second. A fly out and a hit batter followed, with Frain advancing to third on the second out of the inning, another fly ball to center. Back-to-back walks forced in a run, with Smith taking ball four to force home Frain. Lock Haven starter Jacob Belinda (2-1) escaped further damage, but not for long.

The Huskies used two-out thunder to seize the lead in the second. After a pair of groundouts began the inning, Frain started the rally with a single through the right side. Mazza walked and Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) who drove a two-run single to right for a 3-2 lead. Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) followed with a run-scoring double to center and Ravel scored two more runs with his single back through the box. Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) completed the inning with a two-run double to center as the Huskies ultimately sent 10 men to the plate in the inning, scoring seven times on five hits.

Lock Haven slowly began chipping away, however. The Bald Eagles got two runs back in the third and took advantage of a Huskies error to score three times in the fifth, cutting within a run.
Karlston VonKiel settled things down for the Bald Eagles, working four scoreless innings of relief to give his team a chance in the late innings. Lock Haven put runners at first and second with one out in the sixth, but Bloomsburg reliever Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) coaxed a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Lock Haven put the tying run on base to lead off the seventh when Anthony Kyne walked, but Heane delivered two fly outs to center and a foul out to the catcher to seal the victory.

Matt Jaskolka (Warren/Warren Area) (3-1) earned his third win of the year with 4.2 innings, with only four of the seven runs charged to him being earned. Jaskolka walked two and struck out four. Heane picked up his first save of the season with 2.1 innings of scoreless work out of the bullpen.

Frain stroked two hits and scored twice while Ravel and Almand both drove in two runs apiece.

Botts led the Lock Haven offense with three hits.

The two teams do battle again on Sunday with a doubleheader at Lock Haven.
