LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Runs were aplenty in a game one 16-0 victory for the Bloomsburg University baseball team, but the Huskies settled for a doubleheader split at Lock Haven's Foundation Field on Sunday afternoon after a 7-5 setback in the nightcap.
Â
The Huskies (10-8, 3-1 PSAC East) took three of four games over the weekend from divisional rival Lock Haven (9-7, 1-3) to win the first series of the conference season.
Â
GAME ONE – Huskies 16, Lock Haven 0
Â
The Huskies pounded out a season-high 19 hits en route to a dominating 16-0 victory in the first game of the day.
Â
Bloomsburg wasted little time in taking control of the contest, plating three runs in the top of the first.
Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) started the scoring with his two-out RBI single to center.
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) followed with a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third before
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) plated both runners with a two-run single to center for the 3-0 advantage.
Â
Two more runs scored in the second as the Huskies did two-out damage.
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) reached on a bunt single and moved to third on a double from
Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn). Lock Haven appeared to be out of the inning, but an error in left field allowed both runners to score and stretch the Huskies lead to five.
Â
From there, Bloomsburg starter
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) (3-1) was on cruise control. Hill allowed just two hits in his six innings of work, blanking the Bald Eagles while striking out six with just one walk.
Â
While Hill was putting up zeroes on the scoreboard, his offense continued tacking on. Bloomsburg opened the flood gates with an eight-run sixth highlighted by a two-run single to left by West and a triple by Smith, also plating two runs. Three more runs scored in the Bloomsburg seventh with pinch hitter
Pete Edgar (Hatfield/North Penn) driving a two-run double to left center.
Â
Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) pitched a perfect seventh to close out the win, striking out one.
Â
Smith went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored to power the Huskies offensive explosion. Muth, West and
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) all had two hits apiece while
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) posted two hits, three runs and an RBI.
Â
GAME TWO – Lock Haven 7, Huskies 5
Â
Lock Haven led early, rallied in the middle innings and then held off a late charge from the Huskies for the split.
Â
The Bald Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third, scoring two unearned runs following RBI hits from Scott Zuback and Anthony Kyne.
Bloomsburg immediately fought back, taking the lead with a three-run fourth.
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) started the rally with a one-out double to right center and moved to third on a single from Muth. Smith doubled in Casselberry and Muth scored one batter later on an RBI single from Ravel. Almand gave the Huskies their first lead with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Ravel for a 3-2 score.
Â
The Huskies' edge would be short-lived, however, as Lock Haven answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jamie Eshleman tied the game with a sac fly to center and Tyson Petersheim put the hosts back on top with a run-scoring double down the left field line. Ryan Henritzy gave Lock Haven another run, knocking home Petersheim with his single to center.
Â
Lock Haven added what turned out to be needed insurance in the fifth. Ryan Koch tallied an RBI double and Eshleman added a fielder's choice RBI for a 7-3 lead.
Â
Bloomsburg refused to go away, though. Baiade ripped a two-out pinch hit double to score Smith who had reached on a bunt single.
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) added an RBI single to right to pull within two, but Lock Haven reliever Cody Godfrey worked out of a bases loaded jam without any further damage.
Â
It would be Bloomsburg's best chance to come back as Aaron Lidgett turned in a perfect seventh inning to lock down a win for the Bald Eagles, earning his third save of the year.
Â
Smith posted a 3-for-4 line at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Ravel also had two hits in three trips to the plate with an RBI.
Â
Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) (0-1) started for the Huskies, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work, striking out three.
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) worked two scoreless innings out of the Huskies 'pen to keep things close in the late innings.
Â
Parker Watson (2-1) picked up the win for Lock Haven, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.
Â
The Huskies are back in action at home on Friday afternoon, beginning a four-game home-and-home series vs. West Chester with a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
