EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – A complete game shutout on the mound from senior
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) led the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a 1-0 game one victory at East Stroudsburg, tying the school record for most Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) wins in a season with the Huskies' 16th conference triumph of the year. Defending PSAC champion ESU responded with an 8-3 victory in the second game for a Friday afternoon split at Mitterling Field.
The Huskies now stand at 24-14 overall and 16-6 in the PSAC East and tied for first place with Millersville which swept a doubleheader at Mansfield on Friday. East Stroudsburg, meanwhile, moves to 26-13, 12-10.
With the game one win Friday, the Huskies have tied the 1997 team for the most conference wins in a single season with six PSAC East games remaining.
Both teams entered the weekend ranked in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region poll – ESU is ranked No. 4 in the region while the Huskies are No. 10.
GAME ONE – Huskies 1, East Stroudsburg 0Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) tossed his sixth consecutive complete game, seventh of the year and 14th of his career to lead the Huskies to a victory in a game one pitchers' duel. Cooperman moved into a tie for third all-time in Huskies history for career complete games with the performance, his second complete game shutout of the season.
The win was the eighth straight for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg threatened multiple times to put runs on the board, placing runners in scoring position in the first through fourth innings and again in the sixth, but could not break through against ESU starter Ryan Lubreski until the seventh.
The Huskies plated the only run of the game with some clutch, two-out hitting from freshman
Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) in the top of the seventh.
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) doubled with one out and remained at second base when Muth came to the plate with two away. The Huskies leading hitter on the year came through yet again, driving an RBI single to score Frain and break the scoreless deadlock.
That was enough for Cooperman (5-4) who pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to lock down the win. The senior scattered five hits, walked only one and struck out three Warriors while allowing a runner past second only once. ESU put a runner at third in the home half of the fourth with one out, but Cooperman coaxed a double play ball to end the threat.
Bloomsburg picked up nine hits in the game, led by Frain's 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) continued his recent hot hitting with a pair of singles.
Lubreski (5-2) was the tough-luck loser, throwing all seven innings while surrendering one run on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Chris Knott was the only Warrior to have multiple hits vs. Cooperman – a pair of singles.
GAME TWO – East Stroudsburg 8, Huskies 3The Warriors opened the flood gates for a five-run second inning and never looked back in the nightcap.
After the Huskies grabbed a 1-0 first inning advantage on an RBI bunt single from
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson), East Stroudsburg finally awoke at the plate after being shutout for eight consecutive innings.
East Stroudsburg handed Bloomsburg starter
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) (5-3) his roughest day of the year, chasing the junior southpaw with five runs on six hits during a lengthy second inning to seize control of the contest.
Bloomsburg rallied for two runs in the third, opening the inning on back-to-back doubles from
Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) and Frain while a double play ball scored Frain later in the inning to pull the Huskies within 5-3.
ESU pushed across three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, however, to effectively put the game on ice.
Hill lasted 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) worked 4.1 innings of relief, surrendering three runs on four hits including one walk with two strikeouts.
Matt Festa (4-1) went the distance for ESU, scattering six hits while surrendering three earned runs. Festa walked two and struck out two.
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) had a two-hit day while Frain scored twice to lead the Huskies offense.
Nico Delerme ignited ESU with two hits and four RBI.
The two teams return to action by wrapping their four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field beginning at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Cooperman moves into a tie for fourth in Huskies history for complete games in a season. The all-time record is 12 set by Chad Arnold in 1995…Muth has reached base in 25 straight games while Frain stretched his hitting streak to 11 games in a row.
