BLOOMSBURG – Already with a ticket to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament punched, the Bloomsburg University baseball team had a history-making day Saturday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field as the Huskies established a new record for most PSAC victories in a season with a thrilling come-from-behind, extra innings 7-6 win vs. East Stroudsburg in game one.

The second game of Saturday's twinbill also went extras with the defending PSAC champion Warriors salvaging a series split with a 1-0 eight inning victory.

Bloomsburg now stands 25-15 overall and 17-7 in the PSAC East, breaking the old mark of 16 conference wins which had stood since the 1997 team finished with a 16-8 record against the PSAC East.

East Stroudsburg, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region poll, moves to 27-14 and 13-11 in the PSAC East.

The two teams also split a Friday doubleheader at ESU. The Huskies clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament following Friday's action when Shippensburg lost both games of a doubleheader with West Chester. Bloomsburg entered the day in a first-place tie with Millersville which was idle on Saturday.

GAME ONE – Huskies 7, East Stroudsburg 6 (8 innings)
East Stroudsburg was in control for much of game one and appeared to have things in hand until the Huskies mounted a ferocious late innings rally, ultimately winning in walk-off fashion on an eighth inning sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan).

The Warriors led 4-0 via a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings before the Huskies pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to trail by three.

After being stifled by ESU starter Matt Smith for most of the day, the Huskies finally broke through in the sixth. Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) started the rally with a single up the middle and moved to second an out later when Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) was hit by a pitch. Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) followed with an RBI double down the right field line to chase Smith from the game. ESU reliever Andrew Furber allowed a sacrifice fly to Smith but escaped any further damage as the score remained 4-3.

Two seventh inning runs from the Warriors seemed to put things in hand for the visitors as they scored first on a sac fly from Eric Forth and then a fielder's choice stretched the ESU edge to 6-3.

Bloomsburg was not to be denied, however. The Huskies rattled off four straight base hits in the seventh from Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn), Frain, Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) and a run-scoring single from Muth to chase closer Keenan Stare before an out was recorded. Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) knocked in a run with an RBI ground out to score Frain for a 6-5 score with runners at second and third for Almand. The sophomore infielder delivered a smash through the left side to score Mazza, but pinch runner A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) was thrown out at the plate attempting to score the winning run from second base and a strikeout from ESU's Dan Woodley sent the game to extra innings.

ESU had a golden opportunity to score in the eighth with .400-hitter Chris Knott at the plate with one out and runners at second and third. Huskies reliever Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) coaxed a double play ball to short, however, to end the threat.

Smith led off the home half of the inning with a single to right and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt from Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick). A single through the left side from West put runners at the corners for Frain who did more than enough with a long drive to deep right, allowing Smith to tag and score from third without a throw for the game-winning run.

Heane (3-1) earned the win in relief, working two innings while allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout. Matt Jaskolka (Warren/Warren Area) started and finished with six innings of four-run work, striking out four.

Casselberry, Muth and West each had two hits to power the Huskies offense.

Woodley (1-1) was charged with the loss for ESU.

GAME TWO – East Stroudsburg 1, Huskies 0 (8 innings)
Seven innings again would not be enough in the nightcap as the Warriors prevailed, 1-0, in eight innings.

Bloomsburg starter Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) and his counterpart Brandon Holup matched each other zero for zero through over six innings before the Huskies finally chased Holup from the game in the seventh. The Huskies loaded the bases in the seventh inning with only one out, but Warriors reliever Andrew Furber delivered a double play ball to end the threat.

The Huskies failed to find the hit they needed with runners in scoring position often throughout the late innings, stranding 10 runners on base. East Stroudsburg made Bloomsburg pay for its missed opportunities in the eighth, scoring the game's only run on an RBI single to right center from Nico Delerme.

An excellent effort for Hunter went by the wayside as the senior had his finest outing of the year, working seven scoreless innings while allowing only four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. East Stroudsburg sent a runner past second base against Hunter only once – using a single and a failed pickoff attempt throwing error to place a runner at third with two outs in the seventh, but Hunter coaxed a fly ball to erase the threat.

Holup lasted 6.1 innings for ESU, picking up a no-decision after scattering eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Furber (4-0) was the winner with 1.2 innings of hitless work out of the Warriors bullpen.

Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) (2-1) was charged with the loss, pitching an inning while allowing one run on one hit with a walk.

Frain had two hits for the Huskies, the only player from either side to hit safely more than once.

Bloomsburg is off until next Friday when it starts the final PSAC East series of the regular season, a four-game set with Mansfield beginning on the road.

GAME NOTES: The Huskies are now 10-2 at home this season, with the game one victory being their first walk-off win of the year … Game two marked the first time Bloomsburg has been shut out all year … Saturday was also the first doubleheader of the year to have both games go to extra innings … the Huskies kept alive a streak of not losing a divisional series yet this season … Muth has reached base in 27 straight games while Frain has hit safely in 13 consecutive contests.
