PHILADELPHIA – The Bloomsburg University bats were silenced in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon as the Huskies dropped a doubleheader at non-conference Philadelphia University by scores of 9-1 and 5-1.
The Huskies complete their regular season slate at 28-18 overall while Philadelphia, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), moves to 17-21.
Sunday's games had no bearing on next week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament as the Huskies are locked into the No. 2 seed from the Eastern Division. Bloomsburg's first round opponent was determined Sunday afternoon, however, as the Huskies will play Pitt-Johnstown, the No. 3 seed from the Western Division on Wednesday afternoon in Butler, Pa. The Mountain Cats secured their spot in the PSAC Tournament with a sweep of Gannon on Sunday.
GAME ONE – Philadelphia 9, Huskies 1The Rams ran out to an early lead and never looked back, securing a 9-1 win in the opener at Alumni Field.
Philly U plated an unearned run in the first and tacked on two more scores in the second, but really did its damage in the third. The Rams stroked three hits in the four-run inning and also took advantage of a Huskies error, a wild pitch, a walk and a hit batter to take control of the contest.
The hosts ultimately stretched their lead to nine with a two-run sixth before the Huskies got on the board in the seventh on a solo home run from
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI). The sophomore's second round-tripper of the year would be the only damage done against Philadelphia starter Rob Spragis (2-1) who worked a complete game gem, scattering seven hits while walking none and striking out two.
Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) (0-2) picked up the start and lasted 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Matt Hurd (Orefield/Parkland) was charged with three runs while
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) tossed the final 3.1 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan), who ultimately went 6-for-9 at the plate Sunday, posted two hits while
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) had the other extra base hit for the Huskies with a double in the second.
Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) posted two hits and stole two bases for the Huskies.
GAME TWO – Philadelphia 5, Huskies 1Frain tallied his first four-hit day as a Husky in the second game with a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate, but pitching ruled again for the Rams as this time it was freshman Joe Sabatino who turned in a complete game gem.
The Huskies led early, scoring first with a second-inning run.
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) singled to lead off and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from West. A groundout moved Smith to third and he would score on an RBI single by
Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) for the 1-0 lead.
Philadelphia roared back in the third, scoring four times and then added another run in the fifth.
That would be more than Sabatino (1-2) would need as he earned his first win of the year by stranding seven Huskies on base and striking out six with one walk while allowing eight hits.
Sean McCloskey (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) (2-2) started and was charged with two earned runs in 2.1 innings while
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) worked 3.2 innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout.
Frain singled four times while the lone extra base hit for the Huskies was a double from
Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland).
The Huskies open play in the PSAC Tournament against Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. inside Kelly Automotive Park in Butler.
GAME NOTES: Sunday's games did not count toward the Huskies in-region record as Philadelphia is considered part of the East Region as a member of the CACC … Frain added to his team-best total of 18 multi-hit games with his four-hit outing in the nightcap … Muth had a streak of 31 straight games reaching base snapped in game one. That was the longest such streak for BU since
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) reached base in 34 consecutive games in 2012 … the 28 wins thus far on the season are the most for the Huskies since winning 30 games in 1997 and are third-most in school history … Bloomsburg will make its first PSAC Tournament appearance since 2011 next week.
