CLARION, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team pounded out 15 runs on 16 hits for a 15-6 victory in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader at Clarion on Wednesday afternoon after coming up short in a 3-2 game one loss.
The Huskies return home with a 17-13 overall record on the season while Clarion, a member of the PSAC Western Division, stands at 5-19.
GAME ONE – Clarion 3, Huskies 2Strong pitching defined the opener, with a pair of third inning runs from the host Golden Eagles being enough to stand up for victory.
Bloomsburg seized the early lead with a run in the first.
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) opened the game by finishing a seven pitch at-bat by driving a double to center field and scored with two outs on an RBI single to right off the bat of
Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland).
Clarion tied the score in the second with a run of its own and took a 3-1 lead on back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Mike Lockhart and Tyler Falk.
The Huskies got one of those runs back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from
James Ott (Massapequa/Massapequa) and had another runner at third base, but
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) was later tagged out in a long run down between third and home to retire the side.
Bloomsburg threatened again in the sixth when
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) singled and then stole second with two outs and in the seventh when
Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) led off with a single and stole second with no outs. Pinch hitter
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) walked and the runners moved up on a sac bunt from Frain. A fielder's choice forced out West at the plate for the second out, however, and Clarion's Alex Borofski coaxed another ground ball to end the game.
Borofski was excellent for the Golden Eagles as the sophomore picked up his first win with a complete game on the hill, scattering eight hits while walking three and striking out one.
Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) (0-1) started and worked all six innings for the Huskies, scattering seven hits which turned into three earned runs. Schaffer did not walk a batter and struck out three in his first start of the season.
Muth and Almand each had two hits to pace the Huskies while Lockhart was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Clarion.
GAME TWO – Huskies 15, Clarion 6There would be no such offensive troubles for the Huskies in the second game of the day as they exploded for an 8-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back in one of the strongest outputs of the season.
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) and
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) put together back-to-back singles with Mazza scoring the first run of the game on another RBI hit from Muth. Ravel gave the Huskies a two-run edge later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Bloomsburg broke the game open with a six-run second, batting around during a lengthy half inning. The biggest blow in the Huskies uprising was off the bat of Casselberry as the sophomore drilled a three-run home run to left for his first career round-tripper in maroon and gold.
To end any doubt, Bloomsburg tacked on five more runs in the third. Muth drove in the first run with his first career triple before Almand and West each singled in runs. Russell capped the inning with his two-run single to left, scoring Almand and West.
Sophomore
Matt Hurd (Orefield/Parkland) recorded his first win of the year with two innings of scoreless relief. Hurd did not walk a batter and struck out two.
Bryce Mengel (Lansdale/North Penn) started and worked three innings allowing two runs with a strikeout.
Nick Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) and
Jack Fritz (West Chester/Rustin) also worked an inning apiece out of the Bloomsburg bullpen, each picking up a strikeout.
Muth had a career day with a personal-best four RBIs, putting an exclamation mark on the afternoon with a two-run homer to left in the seventh, to power the Huskies offense as part of a 3-for-4 game at the plate with three runs scored. Almand and Frain both tallied three hits apiece while Russell had a season-high three RBIs and Casselberry also drove in three runs.
Bloomsburg returns to PSAC East play when it hosts Kutztown in a doubleheader Friday at Danny Litwhiler Field beginning at 1 p.m.
