ABOUT KUTZTOWNKutztown has just two games left on its schedule - Wednesday vs. Bloomsburg and Feb. 25 at East Stroudsburg - with a chance to lock down the No. 2 seed from the PSAC East and a bye to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, entering this week a half game up on West Chester. KU's 16 wins this season are the most for the program since going 18-9 in 2011-12.
Close games have been the name of the season for KU, which has had 15 contests decided by single digits while posting an 8-7 record in such games. An instant classic quadruple overtime loss at home vs. West Chester, 97-96, on Jan. 31 may be the difference in having a bye or not.
Kutztown ranks fourth in the PSAC in offense at 74.8 ppg, behind ESU, West Chester and Bloomsburg. Kutztown is also eighth in defense, allowing 71.3 ppg. At 47.3 percent shooting from the floor, only one PSAC team (IUP) shoots the ball more accurately, which is one reason KU is just 16th in offensive rebounds per game (8.6).
The Golden Bears have a dynamic offensive duo of Tynell Fortune, who ranks ninth in the league in scoring at 15.4 ppg, and Josh Johnson (14.2 ppg). Johnson stands third in the league in field goal percentage, hitting 62.3 percent of his 236 attempts this year.
LAST MEETING / SERIES HISTORY Â
Bloomsburg leads 107-51Wednesday marks the 159th meeting between Bloomsburg and Kutztown in men's basketball, a series that once was dominated by the Huskies, but the Golden Bears have had the upper hand in recent years by winning seven of the past 10 meetings. In the first meeting of the year, KU held on for an 89-85 victory at Nelson Field House. Bloomsburg went on a 14-6 run over the final 52 seconds, but could not overcome a 21-point second half deficit.
Jon Riles (Philadelphia/Academy of the New Church) hit four 3-pointers in the final 41 seconds to finish with 18 points while
Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had 20 points to lead the Huskies. Josh Johnson went a perfect 9-of-9 from the floor for a game-high 21 points to power Kutztown.
Kutztown has won 13 straight games at home in the series, with Bloomsburg's last win at KU coming in a 70-61 decision on Jan. 23, 2002. The Huskies have lost eight of those games by single digits including four by three points or fewer.
