HEMPSTEAD, NY—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team posted its first win of the season downing VMI (Virginia Military Institute) on Sunday by a score of 20-18 at the Hofstra University Duals. In match two of the day the Huskies fell to Hofstra, 27-16.
 
Against the Keydets the Huskies fell behind 3-0 at 125 pounds when VMI's Dalton Henderson posted a 5-3 win over Jon Haas (Penfield, NY/Penfield). Bloomsburg came back and took the lead at 133 pounds when Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) had three takedowns and one four-point near fall in winning 12-2. The major decision win put the Huskies up 4-3.
 
VMI picked up wins in the next four matches to go on top 18-4, but the victory at 165 would be its last. At 174 pounds Casey Glunt (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan), who dropped a weight class, rolled to a 7-1 win for the Huskies to make it 18-7. At 184 pounds, Kyle Wojtaszek (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), who moved up a weight, posted a a win by major decision, 12-4, to close the gap to 18-11 with two matches to go.
 
VMI then forfeited at 197 pounds to make it 18-17 and put the match in the hands of the heavyweights. For the Huskies, Saul Wilkins (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR), a true freshman, fell behind 2-0 before getting an escape to make it 2-1 after one period. In the second period Wilkins chose bottom and escaped to tie the match at 2-2. In the third period, VMI took bottom and escaped to regain the lead, 3-2. After a stalling warning on VMI, Wilkins was awarded a point to knot the match at 3-3. Then Wilkins scored a huge takedown and rode his opponent the rest of the way to get the win and give Bloomsburg the match victory.
 
The victory was the first for the Huskies since Feb. 22, 2014 when they beat Binghamton, 28-12.  
 
In the match with Hofstra the Huskies started quickly getting wins from Haas at 125, 3-1 in sudden victory, and Schutz at 133 who picked up a win by fall in just 1:24, to make it 9-0 after two matches.
 
Hofstra came back with a win by forfeit at 141 and a win by fall at 149 to go on top 12-9. The Huskies tied up the match with a win from Brendon Colbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) at 157 pounds who posted a 5-2 decision. The Pride then posted wins in the next four bouts to take a 23-12 lead.
 
Needing a win by fall in the final two matches to win the match, the Huskies Dominic Carfagno (West Paterson, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) won by major decision, 12-4, at 197 pounds, to make it 23-16. At 285 pounds, Hofstra picked up a 9-0 win to win the match 27-16.
 
Bloomsburg, 1-8, will travel to Pittsburgh for the Pitt Duals on Jan. 9.
