WOMEN'S SEASON PREVIEW
The Bloomsburg University women's swimming team enters 2016-17 looking to build off of another successful season that saw it go 8-2 and take second at the PSAC Championships.
Â
The team lost six seniors and will be competing without senior
Nikki Young (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) due to injury. "Nikki (Young) is going to be out for the season, but she's rehabbing," said head coach
Stu Marvin. "She will be on the deck with us and I know the team will respond to her. She's been to the National Championships which gives her great credibility with her teammates."
Â
Among the seniors who graduated were the core of the relays for Bloomsburg. Â The Huskies are hoping to fill the void with the incoming class of five freshmen and one walk-on sophomore. Marvin said, "The freshman class is small but pretty strong. We look for great things and we also need others to step up and make a statement."
Â
Captains for the 2016-17 season will be
Nikki Young (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton),
Alison Turzanski (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), and
Karly Hursey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll). Along with them, the team is expected to be led by
Brooke Gilson (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall),
Courtney Middleton (Vineland, N.J./Vineland), and
Colleen Finias (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East). Â Gilson is one of the top distance swimmers in the conference while Middleton and Finias both are senior butterfliers. Also returning after a season off is
Kaci McIlmoyle (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove), a fifth year senior, whose impact will be significant in several events.
"We lost some very good freestylers to graduation, so we had to go find solid replacements," said Marvin. "With the addition of
Rebecca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford),
Kaitlyn Floyd (Mertztown, Pa./Kutztown Area),
Shannon Ball (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff), and
Kiera Wadsworth (Folsom, Pa./Ridley), we should have a firm base to work from. All four of them had successful high school careers and postseason experience".
Â
In the distance events, graduated senior
Caroline Hodgins (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) holds the team records in the 1000 free and 200 free. Filling that loss are expected to be Gilson, Hursey, and Cubbler. "They will be a solid one-two-three punch all year long," said Marvin.
Â
In the backstroke, expected to fill in for the loss of graduated senior
Alex Wheatley (Dresher/Upper Dublin), who won the PSAC Championship in the 100-back, are
Mary Kate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest), Sam Campbell, Meg Carey, and incoming freshmen
Deanna Shuster (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and
Kiera Wadsworth (Folsom, Pa./Ridley). Â
Â
The Huskies look to have another successful season and a very eventful postseason. "Our women are at a point where we are always in the picture.  After finishing second in back-to-back seasons, they have tremendous confidence in their abilities. It is going to be a great season."
Â
Bloomsburg will hold its annual Maroon and Gold Meet on Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. and then its Alumni Meet on Saturday, October 15 at 11:00 a.m. The Huskies will host West Chester University in the season opener at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29 at the Nelson Field House Pool.
