SETTING THE SCENE
• Bloomsburg went 1-2 at the Boilermaker Duals last weekend beating Indianapolis (20-12) and falling to Northern Illinois (23-12) and to Purdue (26-6). The Huskies are now 3-2 on the year.
• Two wrestlers,
Matt Noble (Bridgewater, NJ/DePaul Catholic (NJ)) and
Brendon Colbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) were both two-time winners for Bloomsburg, while Spiller posted the Huskies lone pin taking down his opponent from NIU in 3:58.
• In the loss to NIU the Huskies dropped five of the matches by three points or less. In the loss to Purdue the Huskies dropped four matches by four points or less.
• Bloomsburg announced the hiring this week of former Penn State All-American
Russ Hughes as its new assistant coach. Hughes comes to Bloomsburg from Benton High School where he was the head coach since 2007.
• This is the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and the Wildcats.
NORTHWESTERN NOTES
• Northwestern dominated en route to its third consecutive win to open the season, beating Cal Poly on the road, 30-8, on Nov. 12.
Â
The Wildcats won eight bouts, including four by bonus point decisions. 18 of their 27 individual wins so far this year have resulted in bonus points.
• The Wildcats opened the season with dominant wins at home on the first weekend of the season against UChicago (47-3) and North Central (41-0).
• Red shirt-junior Mitch Sliga is ranked number 20 at 184 lbs. in this week's Amateur Wrestling News rankings.
• Matt Storniolo is in his first official season as head coach after serving as the team's interim head coach during the 2015-16 season. He spent the previous six seasons as an assistant for the Wildcats. As an assistant, Storniolo, a two-time All-American himself, made an immediate and significant impact on NU's success on the mat, particularly at the middle weights.
QUOTABLE FROM HEAD COACH MARCUS GORDON
On The Opening Weekend
"We had a great effort out in Indiana by all ten starters. There were some things we can work on, but they are fixable with more work on technique in the room.
On Northwestern
"Northwestern is a young team as well with several freshmen in the lineup. It should be a good match between two young teams going after it."
