ERIE, Pa. - Fresh off of its historic victory over West Chester last Saturday, the Bloomsburg University men's swimming team built off the win and earned an impressive 135-70 victory at Gannon University on Friday night. The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Golden Knights fell to 1-1 on the year.
Nine different swimmers posted at least one individual victory or was part of a relay-winning team on Friday night. Freshman
Devon Polak (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) led the way with three victories - two individual and one relay - while freshman
Colin Bauer (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and sophomore
Kyle Dix (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) added one individual and one relay win apiece.
Also getting victories were junior
Josh Grzech (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood), freshman
Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy), junior
Paul Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), senior
Eric Usbeck (Lake Ariel, Pa./Wallenpaupack), senior
A.J. Brady (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy), and freshman
Jordan Wyant (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity).
The Huskies also had 16 PSAC qualifying times on Friday night.
Bloomsburg started strong with a 1-2-4 finish in the 200-yard medley relay to get things going. Grzech, Bauer, Polak, and Dix won the event by edging the second-place team of Brady, junior
Sam Feiser (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), junior
Paul Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), and redshirt junior
Ryan Paisley (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area). Coming in fourth place was the team of senior
Bobby Lenahan (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), senior
Eric Usbeck (Lake Ariel, Pa./Wallenpaupack), freshman
Matt O'Donnell (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South), and senior
Pat Stasio (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham).
Boehme followed up the relay with a dominant performance in the 1000-yard freestyle as he was the only swimmer to touch the wall in under ten minutes (9:53.85). It was his first collegiate individual victory. Junior teammate
Logan Winchester (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) was second with a time of 10:21.64.
The Huskies continued to pile on the victories as they nearly went wire-to-wire with the top finisher in each event - only falling in the 200-yard freestyle relay to end the evening. All three of Bloomsburg's teams in the final event of the night swam as exhibitions.
Polak won the 200-yard freestyle for his first career individual win, finishing with a time of 1:48.89. He was able to hold off junior teammate
Alex McCullough (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), who finished second with a time of 1:49.51.
The Huskies then went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle as Dix (21.54) narrowly beat out Paisley (21.83). Junior
Paul Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) followed with a win in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:21.44. Freshman
Liam Schroeder (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) was third in the event with a time of 4:25.39.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Bauer claimed the victory by finishing the race in 2:03.82. Senior
Eric Usbeck (Lake Ariel, Pa./Wallenpaupack) followed that with a 47.72 time in the 100-yard freestyle to earn the victory in that event. Brady was next, capturing the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.42. Wyant then picked up his first career win in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:59.12. He was able to hold off McCullough who was second with a time of 5:00.24.
Polak closed out the Huskies'Â string with his third victory of the night in the 200-yard breaststroke. He touched the wall in 2:16.85, just ahead of Paisley who posted a time of 2:17.23.
Bloomsburg will look to make it three straight wins to start the season when it heads to Edinboro University for a 12:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon.
