Game 2 Box ScoreWINGATE, N.C. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team got cooled off on Saturday afternoon, dropping a twinbill at Wingate University to snap a five-game winning streak. The Huskies suffered a 12-8 loss in the opening game and then dropped a 6-1 decision to the Bulldogs in the nightcap. Bloomsburg fell to 6-4 overall while Wingate improved to 12-7 on the season.
The Huskies, who came in averaging 9.6 runs per game in their first eight contests, were held to just nine total runs on Saturday with four of those coming in the first three innings of the opener.
Senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton), Bloomsburg's leading hitter entering Saturday's action, plated the first run of game one with an RBI single in the top of the first inning, scoring redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) who reached on a one-out infield single. The Huskies added two unearned runs later in the frame when a ball hit by freshman
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton) was misplayed by Wingate right fielder Bill Krebs.
Senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) gave the Huskies a 4-0 advantage in the top of the third inning with a one-out solo home run to center field. It was his seventh round tripper of the young season.
But, in the bottom of the third, the roof caved in for the Huskies and redshirt sophomore starter,
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County). Wingate scored five runs in the home half of the third, all of which were unearned after Bloomsburg committed three errors. The Bulldogs would not trail the rest of the afternoon.
Wingate added two in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Shane Billings and Bill Krebs, two in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff home run from Bill Brown and an RBI single from Reece Daniel, and then two more in the sixth on run-scoring singles from Colby Barnette and Andrew Llewellyn.
With the Huskies trailing 11-4, the visitors cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Bloomsburg's first run scored when Casselberry grounded into a double play. Kirman followed with his second home run of the game, and eighth of the season, to get the Huskies to within 11-6.
Wingate answered with a single run in the bottom of the seventh while the Huskies plated two in the top of the eighth for the final margin. Casselberry had an RBI single and Kirman added a sacrifice fly for the Huskies' runs.
Kirman finished 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three runs batted in. Casselberry, Edgette, Kevitch, and sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) also had two hits for the Huskies, who had 13 hits in the contest.
Meyer suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (three earned) on eight hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out four to fall to 1-1 on the season. Senior
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and freshman
Logan Zavada (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) pitched the final four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.
Bloomsburg's bats were held silent in game two as the Huskies could muster only an unearned run on five hits against Wingate starter Kory Behenna.
Redshirt junior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) got the ball in game two and allowed a run in the bottom of the first and then four unearned runs in the bottom of the second as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
Bloomsburg got its run in the top of the third when Edgette led off with a walk and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw. After reaching third, Edgette scored on an RBI groundout by Casselberry.
The hosts completed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Zach Little.
Amaike dropped to 0-2 on the season after allowing six runs (two earned) on ten hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out five. The story was Behenna, who improved to 2-2 for the Bulldogs. He allowed a walk and struck out four in the complete game victory.
Five different Huskies had hits in the nightcap while Little had three of Wingate's ten hits.
The same two teams will meet again at Wingate's Ron Christopher Stadium on Sunday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
