STORYLINE
Bloomsburg will attempt to snap an eight-game losing skid when it plays Kutztown in a crucial four-game series this weekend (the teams will play in Kutztown on Saturday). The Huskies have not won since sweeping a doubleheader against Philadelphia University on April 6. Bloomsburg finds itself one game behind Kutztown for fifth and two games behind Shippensburg for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division. The Golden Bears have lost seven of their last eight games.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Kutztown leads the all-time series against Bloomsburg, 113-99-1. The Huskies have won nine of the last eleven meetings between the two schools, including a pair of victories at the Builder Invitational earlier this season.
LAST MEETINGS
Bloomsburg and Kutztown met twice at the Builder Invitational, hosted by the Newport News Apprentice School, on February 27 and 28. The Huskies won both games in convincing fashion - 20-1 and 17-10 - to win the tournament.
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) hit Kutztown pitching hard in the two games, going 8-for-10 with seven runs scored and seven RBI.
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) (6-for-11, seven runs) and
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) (5-for-8, six runs, five RBI) also swung the bat well.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
The Huskies will be looking to snap an eight-game losing streak as Bloomsburg enters the weekend on the outside looking in for a spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. The Huskies are 20-18 overall and 7-13 in the PSAC East and were, most recently, swept in a four-game weekend series by Millersville last Friday and Saturday. Bloomsburg has continued to swing the bats well as the team sports a .325 batting average.
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) enters with a ten-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 26 of his last 27 games. He leads the team with a .474 batting average (65-of-137) and also leads the team in on-base percentage (.532) and stolen bases (12). He is second in runs scored (47), doubles (13), and walks (15), and ranks fourth on the team with 38 RBI.
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) leads the team with a single-season school-record 15 home runs. He belted his record-breaking 15th last Saturday against Millersville, snapping a tie with Matt Karchner who previously held the record with 14 during the 1989 season.
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) (.360, 7 HR, 49 RBI) and
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) (.344, 9 HR, 41 RBI) have also provided pop in the lineup. The pitching rotation took a bit of a hit last weekend as the team now sports a 6.15 ERA. Freshman
Wyatt Beakler (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) leads the team with a 3.05 earned run average in five appearances (two starts). Of the Huskies' weekend starters,
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) leads with a 5.36 ERA and is 2-4 on the season.
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) (3-2, 6.02),
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) (4-4, 6.47), and
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (1-5, 7.45) should also get the ball this weekend. Amaike leads with 40 strikeouts in 38.2 innings.
SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
Like Bloomsburg, the Golden Bears find themselves in the thick of things for a playoff spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. Kutztown is 18-24 overall and 8-12 in the PSAC East - one game behind Shippensburg for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division. The Golden Bears lost a pair of non-conference games this week (12-8 at Philadelphia on Monday and 4-1 at St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday) after losing three of four to Shippensburg last weekend. Kutztown is batting just .250 as a team and is led in most offensive categories by Alec O'Dell. The junior is batting .319 with four home runs and 28 RBI -Â both team-highs. He also leads the squad with 27 runs scored and eight stolen bases. Derian Sarlat is batting .302, in only 53 at bats, and is the only other Golden Bear with an average of .300 or better. On the mound, Kutztown sports a 5.71 team ERA, but has had good seasons from weekend starters Mike Kammerer and Matt Swarmer. Kammerer is 2-2 with a 3.45 ERA and has struck out 35 batters in 28.2 innings. Swarmer has thrown three complete games and has struck out a whopping 72 batters in 45.1 innings. He, however, is just 3-3 with a 3.97 ERA. Dave King leads the team with a 1.64 ERA in ten appearances (all in relief).
