STORYLINE
The fourth and final playoff spot in the PSAC Eastern Division comes down to this weekend when the Huskies and the Raiders collide. The teams are tied for the last playoff spot in the east while Kutztown, which is one game back, takes on Millersville. Bloomsburg must win, at least three of the four games, against Shippensburg to claim the final playoff spot as the Raiders hold the tiebreaker on the Huskies by virtue of winning a game against Millersville earlier in the season.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Shippensburg leads the all-time series, 114-75. The Huskies have won seven of the last twelve meetings dating back to the 2013 season.
LAST MEETINGS
Last season, Shippensburg won the series, three games to one. The Raiders swept a doubleheader in Shippensburg, 10-8 and 13-1, on April 17 before the teams split a twinbill in Bloomsburg the following day. Shippensburg won the first game, 8-5, before the Huskies took the finale by an 18-9 score.Â
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) had a big series for Bloomsburg, going 7-for-12 with five runs scored and seven runs batted in.
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) was 7-for-14 with three runs and five RBI.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
The Huskies won three of four against Kutztown last weekend to move into a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the PSAC Eastern Division with one weekend left in the regular season. The teams split a doubleheader in Kutztown on Saturday (W 8-0; L 2-4) before the Huskies swept the Golden Bears at Danny Litwhiler Field on Sunday (W 9-2; W 11-5). Bloomsburg enters the series sixth in the PSAC with a .327 team batting average and ninth in the league with a 5.93 earned run average. Sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) has heated up after moving up to the number-six-hole in the lineup. He went 7-for-12 in the series last weekend and enters on a seven-game hitting streak. He is second on the team with a .352 batting average (44-of-125) and also ranks second in stolen bases with eight.
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) continues to lead the team in hitting with a .457 batting average (69-of-151). He is tied for second in the PSAC in hitting and is tied for the conference lead with 69 hits. The 69 hits are tied for fourth-most in program history. He also leads the Huskies in on-base percentage (.515) and stolen bases (12). He has reached base at least once in 31 consecutive games and has hit safely in 29 of his last 31 games.
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) and
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) are tied for third in batting average at .349. Benson leads the team in runs scored (54) while Casselberry leads in runs batted in (51).
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional)'s 15 home runs represent a new single-season school-record, breaking the previous record of 14 set in 1989 by Matt Karchner. Kirman is still tops in the PSAC in round trippers - one ahead of Seton Hill's Matt Malacane. On the mound,
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) has the rotation's best ERA at 5.44 and is 2-5 on the season.
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) is 4-2 with a 5.66 ERA while
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) also sports a 5.66 ERA and is 5-4 on the season. Warren threw his first collegiate shutout in game one of the weekend series against Kutztown on Saturday. Out of the bullpen,
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) leads the team in appearances (12) and saves (3) while sporting a 4.50 ERA.
SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
The Raiders played a four-game series against Millersville last weekend and lost three of the four meetings - winning game two of Friday's doubleheader, 2-1, in ten innings. It was only Millersville's fourth loss of the season. Shippensburg lost 3-0, 2-0, and 16-2 in the other three contests. By virtue of the win against Millersville, the Raiders hold the tiebreaker on Bloomsburg in the race for the postseason. Shippensburg enters with a .297 batting average (11th in the PSAC) and a 6.60 ERA (11th in the PSAC). Grant Hoover is the team's leading hitter with a .369 batting average (58-of-157). Mike Marcinko has had a fantastic season, ranking second on the team with a .360 batting average (58-of-161) while leading the team in home runs (6) and stolen bases (27). His 27 swipes are second in the conference. Marcinko also leads in runs (45) while Dalton Hoiles leads with 37 runs-batted-in. On the mound, Marcus Shippey is 4-4 with a 5.48 ERA. He has struck out a team-high 49 batters in 46 innings. Mark Curtis is 4-6 with a 5.49 ERA. Kyle McClintock has pitched well since moving into the rotation and is 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA in 17 appearances (four starts).
