LAST TIME OUT ...
Bloomsburg exploded for 59 points in the second - 20 from junior
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) - as the Huskies knocked off visiting Edinboro, 97-84, at the Nelson Field House on Monday night. The game was tied at 38-38 at halftime but the Huskies shot 61.8% from the field (21-of-34), made 6-of-9 three-pointers (66.7%), and was 11-of-12 from the foul line (91.7%) during their second-half outburst. Redshirt junior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) led the Huskies with 27 points while Rose added a career-high 22 points in the victory. Senior
Yahmir Greenlee (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin) (14) and junior
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) (10) were also in double figures. McGirt also brought down a game-high, and a career-high, 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Jaymon Mason led Edinboro with 34 points and eight assists.
STARTING FIVE ...
1 - Redshirt junior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) continues his rapid ascent up Bloomsburg's all-time scoring list. The sharpshooter currently sits in 20th place on the school's all-time list with 1,158 career points. He leapfrogged Matt Jefferson (2002-07) during the win against Cheyney last Tuesday and now trails Al Williams (1975-78) by 15 points to move into a tie for 19th place. He has scored at least 20 points in 11 of the 13 games this season and has 31 career 20-point efforts in 65 collegiate games. He has hit double figures in 49 of his last 51 games and has been held to under 10 points in a game only nine times in his career.
2 - Since head coach
John Sanow moved juniors
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) and
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) to the bench, the Huskies' offense has really taken off. Sanow made the switch for the Felician game on December 18 and, since then, Bloomsburg has averaged 88.6 points over its last five contests. Prior to the lineup change, the Huskies averaged only 74.1 points per contest. The move has also significantly helped both Rose and McGirt. McGirt is averaging 15.8 points and 8.2 rebounds as a reserve while Rose is chipping in 12.2 points and 4.6 rebounds over the last five.
3 - Senior
Yahmir Greenlee (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin) has sparked the Huskies' offense as he has started each of the last four games after missing the first nine games of the season. Greenlee, who has started for
Donell Diggs (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy (Prince George's CC)), finished with career-highs in points (15), assists (9), and steals (4) while tying a career-best in rebounds (4) in the 88-73 victory at West Chester on December 30. At Shippensburg last Friday night, Greenlee broke his previous career-high by pouring in 19 points during the four-point loss. All told, Greenlee has hit double figures in all four games and is averaging 15.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals since his return. Greenlee averaged 4.7 points and 1.6 assists in 18 games (one start) with the Huskies last season. He had posted a previous high of 14 points in a win at Mansfield on February 6, 2016 and hit double digits in scoring only twice last season.
4 - After averaging only 3.8 points and 3.0 rebounds last season, junior
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) has stepped into more of an offensive role this season. Rose has hit double figures in scoring seven times after hitting the mark only twice all of last season. He posted the first double-double of his Bloomsburg career against Pitt-Johnstown with 10 points and 10 rebounds and then added a second with career-highs in both points (17) and rebounds (12) against Wilmington. He broke his career-high in points when he poured in 22 against Edinboro on Monday night. He is averaging 9.8 points and 4.9 boards this season.
5 - Bloomsburg had three players post a double-double in the win at Wilmington -
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) (28 pts, 11 reb),
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) (17 pts, 12 reb), and
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) (12 pts, 11 reb). It marked the first time multiple Huskies' players had a double-double since February 10, 2016 against Kutztown - Mortellite (25 pts, 13 reb) and
Malik Garner (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) (20 pts, 10 reb). The Huskies had not had three players post a double-double in the same game since prior to the 1990-1991 season.
THE SERIES ...
Bloomsburg leads the all-time series against Mansfield, 103-75.
LAST MEETING AGAINST MANSFIELD ...
Bloomsburg led by just one, 35-34, at halftime but was able to pull away in the second half to post a 79-71 victory at Mansfield on February 6, 2016. The Huskies led by as many as 16 points late in the second half before settling for the eight-point victory.
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) led five Huskies in double figures with 17 points. Joining Mortellite in double figures were
Yahmir Greenlee (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin) (14),
Tyriek Steward (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Elmer Meyers) (13),
Alex Prislupsky (Olyphant, Pa./Mid-Valley) (11), and
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) (10). Brad Williams led the Mountaineers with 20 points while Matt Tamanosky added 18 points and 11 rebounds.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS ...
After going just 6-21 a year ago, Mansfield has already won six games this season and enters with a 6-6 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers, most recently, suffered an 85-72 loss against #14 Shippensburg on Monday night. Mansfield is only 14th in the PSAC in scoring (73.6) but is eighth in scoring defense (73.2). Matt Tamanosky leads the Mountaineers in scoring (18.1) and he leads the PSAC in field goal percentage (66.7%). He has made 90 of his 135 shot attempts this season. Tamanosky is also second on the team in rebounding (5.8). Malik Carter is second in scoring (15.3) and leads in rebounding (5.9) and steals (2.1). Cedrick Powell (11.7) and Jahyde Gardiner (10.6) are also averaging double digits in scoring. Powell leads the team in assists (5.3) while Gardiner leads in blocked shots (1.5). Depth has been troublesome for the Mountaineers as the team's regular starters - Tamanosky, Carter, Powell, Gardiner, and Gerasimos Koutoufas (8.1 ppg) have combined to score 757 of the team's 883 points (85.7%). Mansfield is also not much of a threat from long range - it is 15th in the PSAC in threes per game (4.9) and 17th in the league in three-point field goal percentage (30.6%).
McGIRT HEATING UP ...
Junior
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) has provided the Huskies with a spark since off the bench since being removed from the starting lineup against Felician on December 18. In his eight starts, McGirt averaged 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds but, over his last five games in a reserve role, McGirt is averaging 15.8 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 31-of-54 (57.4%) from the field. He has hit double figures in all five games off the bench and scored a career-high 26 points in the loss at Shippensburg last Friday night. He posted his fourth double-double of the season on Monday with 10 points and 13 rebounds against Edinboro.
LATEST MEMBER OF THE 1,000-POINT CLUB ...
On Saturday, December 3, redshirt junior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) became the latest member of Bloomsburg University's 1,000-point club when he hit a pair of second-half free throws during the Huskies' 74-68 loss at Mercyhurst. All told, 29 players have hit the milestone in Bloomsburg's history with Mike Ellzy leading the way with 1,911 career points (1993-97). Mortellite now has 1,158 points in his Huskies' career - 20th on the school's all-time list. He needs 15 points to tie Al Williams (1975-78) for 19th position.
CLIMBING ANOTHER LIST ...
Mortellite is also climbing the school's all-time list for career three-pointers. He owns sole possession of fifth on the school's all-time list after he surpassed Aaron Carter and Mike Cheatle with four triples in the win over Lincoln on November 15. Mortellite now has 168 for his career. Next in his sights is Jay DeShields who knocked down 205 triples from 1998-2002.
NOT FOUL AT THE LINE ...
Bloomsburg has been impressive from the charity stripe this season as it ranks third in the PSAC, and 27th in the country, in free-throw percentage (76.6%). Senior
Donell Diggs (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy (Prince George's CC)) (91.8%) and redshirt junior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) (86.6%) are second and fourth in the league, respectively, in accuracy. Junior
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) (81.0%) is 10th in the PSAC while junior
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) (78.7%) is 16th. Diggs, in fact, has made his last 25 free throws. The Huskies have also made a living at the line as they have made more trips to the stripe than their opponent in 11 of the 13 games and have scored more points from the line in 12 of the 13 contests (tied in the other). Bloomsburg is +80 from the free-throw line this season.
DOWNTOWN WITH THE HUSKIES ...
The Huskies have made at least one three-pointer in 167 consecutive games. The last time Bloomsburg did not make a three in a game was on December 4, 2010 in a 54-51 loss at Lock Haven when it went 0-7 from beyond the arc. Bloomsburg has made at least ten three-pointers in a game four times this season - at Penn State Hazleton (10-of-21), against Pitt-Johnstown (10-of-24), against Cheyney (13-of-22), and against Edinboro (10-of-21). The Huskies made ten three-pointers in a game just one time last season - an 85-59 home victory against Millersville on February 17, 2016 (10-of-17). Mortellite is fourth in the PSAC in three-point percentage (44.3%), first in the PSAC (seventh in the country) in three-pointers per game (3.9), and tops in the PSAC (15th in the country) in total three-pointers (51). Mortellite and junior
Alex Prislupsky (Olyphant, Pa./Mid-Valley) have combined to hit 70 of the team's 97 three-pointers.
BENCH PRODUCTION ...
This season, the bench has produced a total of 296 points - an average of 22.8 points per game. Production has certainly increased as the Huskies are now bringing juniors
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) and
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) off the bench. In fact, Bloomsburg's bench outscored West Chester, 34-8; Cheyney, 41-29; Shippensburg, 34-8; and Edinboro, 42-10, in the last four games. All told, Bloomsburg's reserves have outscored the opponent in each of the last seven games and by a margin of 194-95. The opposition has now totaled 249 bench points (19.2 per game).
UP NEXT ...
Bloomsburg will host Millersville University on Saturday, January 14 at the Nelson Field House. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Marauders lead the all-time series, 94-88, against the Huskies. Bloomsburg swept the season series with Millersville a year ago.
