Wrestling Drops Three At Pitt Duals Saturday

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team went 0-3 at the Pitt Duals on Saturday at the University of Pittsburgh's Fitzgerald Field House. Bloomsburg opened the morning with a 29-14 loss to Virginia Military Institute before suffering a 32-6 setback to 23rd-ranked Pittsburgh. In the nightcap, the Huskies fell to Columbia by a 28-17 final.

The Huskies have now lost nine straight duals and dropped to 3-11 overall on the season.

Freshman Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) went a perfect 3-0 on the day to improve to 15-8 overall on the season. Sophomore Grant Bond (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) and redshirt freshman Trevor Allard (Mexico, NY/Mexico) each went 2-1 on Saturday. Bond improved to 7-9 while Allard moved to 14-11 on the year.

After losing the first two matches via technical fall and forfeit against VMI, Bond got the Huskies on the board with a 23-7 technical fall victory over John Reed at 141 pounds. It was Bond's first collegiate technical fall victory. The Keydets picked up back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 before the Huskies rattled off three straight to cut the VMI lead to 17-14 with two matches remaining. Freshman Reid Stanley (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) started the run with an 8-2 decision at 165 pounds. Allard followed suit at 174 pounds while Murphy blanked Chris Beck, 4-0, at 184 pounds for, what proved to be, Bloomsburg final win of the dual.

The 23rd-ranked Panthers won the first four matches before senior Kevin Laubach (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) got Bloomsburg on the board with a 5-2 decision over Taleb Rahmani at 157 pounds. After two more Pittsburgh victories, Murphy earned his second victory of the afternoon at 184 pounds with a 3-1 win in overtime over Donovan McAfee for Bloomsburg's final win against the Panthers.

In the final dual of the day, the Huskies led Columbia, 10-6, after a forfeit win by freshman Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) at 125 and a major decision win by Bond at 141. However, the Lions won the next three bouts - two by decision and one by major decision - to take a 16-10 advantage. Allard picked up his second win of the day at 174 and Murphy won for the third time, this time by major decision, at 184 to give the Huskies a 17-16 lead. However, Bloomsburg forfeited 197 and lost by fall at 285 to conclude the afternoon.

The Huskies will look to snap the skid when it travels to Brown University on Saturday, January 21 and Sacred Heart University on Sunday, January 22. Start times are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
