Men's Swimming Earns First Victory Of Season Friday Evening

COMPLETE RESULTS

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's swimming team picked up its first victory of the 2017-18 season with a 128-76 win over visiting Edinboro University at the Nelson Field House Pool on Friday evening. It was the home opener for the Huskies, who improved to 1-2 on the young season. The Fighting Scots dropped to 0-2 on the year.

Bloomsburg got six individual victories and added wins in both the 200-yard medley relay to start the evening and the 400-yard freestyle relay to conclude the night. Senior Sam Feiser (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) collected a victory in the 100-yard butterfly and then was a part of both relay-winning teams as he led the Huskies with three victories. Sophomore Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy) won both distance events to lead the way with two individual wins. Senior Paul Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and sophomore Jordan Wyant (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) each had an individual and a relay win while sophomore Colin Bauer (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and senior Josh Grzech (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) were part of both relay-winning teams. Freshman Noah Cancro (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) had the other individual victory on the night.

All told, the Huskies also posted 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying marks on the evening.

Grzech, Rocchi, Bauer, and Feiser started the evening with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a time of 1:35.18 - just over four seconds faster than a second-place tie between Edinboro's "A" team and Bloomsburg's "B" squad. Feiser brought home the win with a 20.41 split in the 50-yard freestyle. The Huskies' second-place relay team consisted of redshirt sophomore Nathan Mihalko (Windber, Pa./Richland), sophomore Devon Polak (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin), sophomore Sean Finias (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), and freshman Collin Hummel (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg).

Boehme followed with his first victory of the evening in the 1000-yard freestyle after touching the wall in 10:02.85 - more than 30 seconds faster than senior Alex McCullough (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) who finished second in the event. Cancro earned his victory in the 50-yard freestyle, holding off Hummel by nine-hundredths of a second, to earn his only individual victory of the night. Cancro's time of 21.90 and Hummel's mark of 21.99 both qualified them for the conference meet.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Feiser dominated the field to earn the victory with a time of 50.11 to qualify him for the conference championships. He opened with a 23.15 split in the first 50 yards and led by more than two seconds halfway through the race. He eventually won by just under four seconds and his time tied him for the sixth-fastest result in program history.

Wyant followed with a time of 47.65 in the 100-yard freestyle to earn a victory and a PSAC mark in that event. Two races later, Boehme collected his second victory of the night in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.16. McCullough was right behind with a PSAC-qualifying time of 4:59.19. The Huskies' final individual win of the night came from Rocchi who held off Polak by two-tenths of a second to capture the 100-yard breaststroke. Both qualified for the conference meet.

In the final event of the night, the Huskies' team of Bauer, Wyant, Grzech, and Feiser posted a convincing victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay as they touched the wall in 3:13.27 to win by nearly four seconds.

Bloomsburg will return to the pool next Friday, November 10, when it hosts Clarion University at the Nelson Field House Pool. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
