NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 23, when it competes in the Builder Invitational from Feb. 23-Feb 26. The four-day event will take place in Newport News, Va.
The Huskies currently sit at 2-2 on the year, having split its' first two doubleheaders against Charleston and Pitt-Johnstown last weekend.
LAST TIME OUT …
The Huskies opened their season against the University of Charleston this past Saturday, and won the first game, 7-6 (8 inn.), before falling, 11-4, in the second game. In the two games, Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) led the team with 3-for-7 with a home run and three RBI
In the second doubleheader, Bloomsburg defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 9-3, in game one before losing, 8-7, in game two. In the first contest, the Huskies gave up a run in the top of the first, and proceeded to score eight of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) dominated in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Meanwhile, Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) combined for three RBI and three runs scored.
SEASON NOTABLES SO FAR …
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) leads the Huskies with a .467 batting average and seven hits, and is also first with four doubles and tied for the top spot with four RBI. Additionally, Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) is hitting .357 with five hits and three runs scored on the season.
On the mound, Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) boasts a team-low 2.33 ERA after tossing six innings of three-hit ball against Charleston. Also, Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) has the Huskies' only complete game of 2016, a four-hit, seven-strikeout victory over Pitt-Johnstown.
SCOUTING APPRENTICE SCHOOL
The Builders enter the Invitational with a spotless record of 7-0 on the season. The Apprentice School is giving up just 2.8 runs per game, and is led on the mound by Mike Brumfield, who is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA and 14 strikeouts this season. Additionally, Tyler Woodhouse is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and nine strikeouts in nine innings of work for the Builders.
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF SAINT JOSEPH
The Fighting Saint enter the tournament with a record of 4-3 on the season, and are coming off of an 8-4 loss to Delgado on Feb. 18, and an 8-3 loss to William and Carey.
SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
The Golden Bears are opening their season at the Builder Invitational this weekend. Coming off of a 20-31 (9-19 PSAC) record in 2016, Kutztown is looking to return to postseason play for the first time since 2014.
Senior Alec O'Dell makes the full-time transition to the outfield after splitting his time between both the infield and outfield and 2016. A junior college transfer starting in 45 of his 48 games in his first year in the program, he led KU in batting average (.316), hits (43), home runs (four), RBI (30), runs scored (31), stolen bases (10), doubles (10) and triples (3).
Bo Rottet was the Golden Bears' primary shortstop in 2016 and led the team with 45 starts. He was also atop the team with 11 hit-by-pitches, second with 20 runs scored, third with 33 hits and four stolen bases, fourth with 18 RBI and fifth with a .344 on-base percentage. He also led Kutztown in the field with 97 assists as mainly a shortstop and threw 15.1 innings in four starts on the mound.
SCOUTING IUP
The Crimson Hawks are also playing their first games of the year in Virginia. IUP is looking to rebound from a 2016 campaign that saw it go 20-28 overall, and 12-16 in the PSAC. The Crimson Hawks were picked seventh in the PSAC West preseason poll.
IUP returns five position starters from last year's team, including All-Atlantic Region selection Dan Sepic. Also returning are .300 hitters Cory Wheeler, Ted DeSanti and Anthony Rigous as well as Scott Hess, who led IUP in home runs a season ago. Sepic also returns as IUP's top pitcher, leading the team in ERA, wins and saves.
