TROY, N.Y. - After a solid opening to the 2018-19 season last Saturday, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team will be back in action this weekend for a full slate of activity in the state of New York. The Huskies will open the dual season on Saturday at the Journeymen Northeast Duals as they will square off against 17th-ranked Purdue at noon followed by a match against Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m. Then, on Sunday, Bloomsburg will compete at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.
Bloomsburg will also be sending three individuals - sophomores
Shawn Orem (Pasadena, Md./Mount Saint Joseph),
Cary Palmer (Bensalem, Pa./Council Rock South), and
Logan Womelsdorf (Benton, Pa./Northwest Area) - to East Stroudsburg University on Saturday to compete in the East Stroudsburg Open.
The Huskies opened the campaign last Saturday with a fifth-place finish at the Clarion Open. Bloomsburg had three wrestlers advance to the championship finals - redshirt junior
Lewis Williams (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), redshirt junior
Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), and junior
Bruce Graeber (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) - while junior
Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) won the consolation finals to earn a third-place result. The Huskies finished with 51.5 team points and trailed only Clarion (135 points), Kent State (113 points), Lock Haven (83.5 points), and Cleveland State (61 points) in the standings.
Girard went 5-1 on the day to earn his third-place finish in the 125-pound bracket. After winning his first bout, 3-1, over Brock Wharton from Clarion (unattached), he suffered a 6-4 loss to Penn State's Justin Lopez to get bumped to the consolation bracket. Girard went on to win four straight matches including a 10-6 decision in the finals over Lock Haven's Luke Werner to capture third place in the weight class. He posted one fall over Daniel Rehfeldt of Kent State (unattached) in his opening match of the consolation bracket.
At 133 pounds, Williams earned decisions over Pittsburgh's Garrett Reinsfelder (unattached), Kent State's Raphael Rodriguez, and West Virginia's Caleb Rea (unattached) to get to the finals. However, the junior is his first season with the Huskies, dropped a 3-2 decision to Cleveland State's Armando Torres to place second. Allard, competing at 184 pounds, posted wins by decision over Clarion's Shae Bloom, Clarion's Luke Funck (unattached), and Kent State's Tim Wallace (unattached) to put him in the finals against Andrew McNally of Kent State. McNally, however, came away with the 6-4 decision in the championship match to send Allard to a second-place finish. Graeber, the Huskies' heavyweight, followed an almost identical path to Williams and Allard. The junior won his first two matches by decision over Pitt-Johnstown's Bishop McCoy (unattached) and Pittsburgh's Cole Rickert (unattached) before claiming a medical forfeit win over Pittsburgh's Zach Bruce to advance to the title match. Graeber fell by major decision to Pittsburgh's Demetrius Thomas to finish second at 285 pounds.
Redshirt junior
Grant Bond (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) advanced to the quarterfinals at 149 pounds by virtue of winning his first two matches over Cleveland State's Grant Turnmire and West Virginia's Seth Hogue (unattached) - both by decision. However, Bond's day was cut short as he was trailing 2-1 to Kent State's Kody Komara in the quarterfinals before having to stop due to an injury. Bond also had to take a medical forfeit in his opening match of the consolation bracket. Meanwhile, junior
Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) went 3-2 at 157 pounds on the afternoon as he won his first match of the day over Clarion's Michael Bartolo before falling to Cleveland State's Nico O'dor to drop to the consolation bracket. Newberry went on to post wins over Clarion's Caleb Hetrick (unattached) and Buffalo's Michael Petite (unattached) before losing by fall to Clarion's Avery Shay (unattached) in the consolation semifinals.
At 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore
Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) went 1-2 on the day while junior
Dominick DeMarco (Franklinville, N.J./Clayton) and redshirt freshman
Michael Porreca (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) went winless on the day at 165 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. The Huskies also sent six wrestlers who competed as unattached on Saturday. Freshman
