STORYLINE
The Huskies, who are off to the program's best start since the 2002 season, will play home-and-home doubleheaders against PSAC East-rival, Shippensburg, this weekend. The teams will meet at Danny Litwhiler Field on Friday before heading to Shippensburg on Saturday. Bloomsburg has won three straight and five of its last six. Meanwhile, the Raiders had their seven-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Millersville (game two was postponed).
ALL-TIME SERIES
Shippensburg leads the all-time series, 118-74. Last season, the teams split their four-game series with all four games being played in Shippensburg.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
Offensively, the Huskies are fifth in the PSAC in with a .311 team batting average.
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) leads the team, and is tied for the PSAC lead, in hitting with a .486 average (17-of-35). He also leads the team in on-base percentage (.609), slugging percentage (.714), and stolen bases (6) while ranking third in both hits (17) and runs scored (13) despite missing all four games in North Carolina.
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) is second on the team in hitting at an even .400 (18-of-45). Woelfel leads the team in runs scored (19) and is second in hits (18), runs batted in (13), on-base percentage (.500), and slugging percentage (.644).
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) (.379),
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) (.357), and
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) (.333) also have batting averages above .300 on the season. Swiger leads the team in hits (20), doubles (7), and total bases (32). Meanwhile,
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) leads the team with 20 runs batted in while sporting a .291 batting average (16-of-55).
On the mound, the Huskies are third in the PSAC with a 4.38 team earned run average, trailing only Mercyhurst (2.37) and Seton Hill (4.18).
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) is 1-1 with a team-leading 0.61 ERA in three starts. He ranks third on the team with 18 strikeouts in 14.2 innings.
Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) has a 1.86 ERA in four appearances (three starts). Stoner picked up his first collegiate win over Kutztown on Sunday and, in 19.1 innings of work, the rookie righthander has allowed only nine hits while striking out 21.
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) is also off to a great start as he sports a 4-0 record with a 2.88 ERA in five appearances (four starts). Raines leads the team with 22 strikeouts. Out of the bullpen,
JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) is 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA in six appearances. He has struck out 14 batters in 12 innings.
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional), primarily a starter through his first three seasons, has re-invented himself as he now comes out of the pen. In four relief outings, Warren has not allowed a run and has given up only three hits in eight innings with four walks and nine strikeouts.
SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
At the plate, the Raiders are tied for eighth in the PSAC with a .299 batting average. Grant Hoover leads the team with a .369 mark (24-of-65) and leads the team with 24 hits. Drew Bene comes in with a .357 average (20-of-56) and has one home run and ten runs batted in. Dalton Hoiles is the main power threat for the Raiders as he leads the squad in home runs (4), RBI (14), and slugging percentage (.649) while ranking third on the team with a .333 average (19-of-57). Nick Spangler (.328) and Tommy Baggett (.327) also sport averages above .300 this season.
On the mound, the Raiders have a team ERA of 4.87 which ranks seventh in the conference. Zack Sims is 4-1 with a 2.12 ERA in five starts. In 29.2 innings, he has allowed 20 hits while striking out 32. Andy Crum is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in five appearances (four starts) while Gabe Mosser is 3-3 with a 3.55 ERA in a team-high six starts. He also leads with 44 strikeouts in 33 innings. Out of the pen, Michael Hope has appeared in a team-high eight games and is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA and three saves.
UP NEXT
Bloomsburg is scheduled to head to Clarion University on Tuesday, April 3, for a crossover doubleheader slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies will then return to league play next Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, for a four-game series against East Stroudsburg University. The teams will open on Friday at East Stroudsburg before reconvening on Saturday at Danny Litwhiler Field. Start times are set for 1:00 p.m.
