BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Former Bloomsburg University men's basketball star
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) will be participating in a basketball camp put on by former National Basketball Association (NBA) professional and current Lithuanian Basketball Federation president Arvydas Sabonis, in Sabonis's home country of Lithuania.
Funded by the former NBA player, the Arvydas Sabonis Center in Kaunas hosts numerous basketball camps throughout the year including the one Mortellite will be attending. Sabonis runs one of the top basketball academies in the world. The particular camp that Mortellite is attending runs from July 23-Aug. 3.
"Basketball is religion over there," said Mortellite. "The name Sabonis in Lithuania is like mentioning the name Jordan in Chicago."
The former Husky relishes the opportunity to play and work out with greater potential opportunities ahead.
"There are several teams there to see me work out and play, so we're going to see what happens," said Mortellite. "The facility and its reputation attract teams and scouts from all over Europe and it's a great way to showcase what you can do."
Working with his agent Chris Warren of Warren Sports International, Mortellite understands what he has in mind for his 10-day workout.
"Some teams may invite you back for a second workout while some teams may try to sign you on the spot," said Mortellite. "The end goal is to get out there and compete and see where things go."
"We are very proud of Christian and all that he has accomplished at Bloomsburg University," said BU head coach
John Sanow. "This is the next step in fulfilling his dream of playing professionally overseas. He has worked hard to prepare himself for this opportunity. We wish him well as he heads over to Lithuania."
Mortellite's legendary career at Bloomsburg included three consecutive All-PSAC East first team selections, making him only one of three Huskies in history to accomplish the feat. Mortellite is also ninth on the conference's all-time scoring list with 2,037 career points, while he also became BU's all-time leading scorer on Jan. 31, 2018. He is just the 12
thplayer in conference history to score at least 2,000 points, and is also tied for sixth on the conference list with 314 career three-pointers. In addition, Mortellite is the program record-holder for single-season points (613), single-season three-pointers (110), career three-pointers (314), career free throws made (441), three-point attempts in a season (255), and career three-point attempts. He is also the program's career free throw percentage leader at 88.7 percent (441-497) and missed only 56 free throws in four seasons. Mortellite scored at least 20 points in 56 games, while scoring at least 30 points nine times and being held to single digits just 12 times in 105 career games. He also scored double-digits in 87 of his final 92 games in Maroon and Gold.
