SINGLES BRACKET
DOUBLES BRACKET
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Seniors
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) earned opening-round victories and are still alive after day one of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Singles Championships being held at the Burt Reese Tennis Center this weekend. The duo are scheduled to play in the quarterfinal round on Sunday morning.
Capoferri had no trouble taking care of Shepherd's Ally Frushour as she won in straight sets - 6-0, 6-0. However, Sunday's quarterfinal match should be much tougher as Capoferri will match up against top-seeded Lacey Cohen of Slippery Rock. The two played against each other last season in the PSAC team quarterfinals last May with Cohen winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Calimer knocked off Edinboro's Torye Calleja in the opening round on Saturday by a 6-1, 6-3 final. Calimer will match up against another Slippery Rock participant, Lois Page, in Sunday's quarterfinal round. Page defeated Quinn McClusky of East Stroudsburg, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, the Huskies' duo of Calimer and senior
Vitoria Nery (Teresina, Piaui, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) suffered an opening-round loss to Edinboro's Calleja and Lilly Schmidt by an 8-6 final and were eliminated from the doubles championship bracket.
"We've been working on a lot of things in both singles and doubles and I was very happy to see Taylor and Cassidy really try to apply those things we've worked on," said first-year head coach
Rebecca Helt. "Cassidy and Vitoria played a hard fought match, but we just didn't quite convert the big points. Overall, I'm pleased with where we are and I know we'll only continue to get better."
Sunday's action, weather permitting, is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.
