THE MATCHUP
• The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team will play its final non-conference game of the season when it hosts the Wolves of Cheyney University on Wednesday night.
THE SERIES
• Bloomsburg leads the all-time series against Cheyney, 72-67. The Huskies have won 11 consecutive meetings between the two schools dating back to the Wolves' last victory - a 72-54 win at Cheyney on January 19, 2013. Last season, the Huskies posted a 110-59 win at the Nelson Field House and then earned a 75-58 win in Cheyney.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
•
Sekou Fofana (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic) scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds but Bloomsburg came up short in a 78-75 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday. Trailing by seven with 1:51 to play, the Huskies got a pair of three-pointers from
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) and
Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) to slice the deficit to one with under 30 seconds to play. Bloomsburg would get a last look to send the contest into overtime but a steal from Damian Young would secure the Lock Haven victory. Fofana notched just the second double-double of his young career with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 11 rebounds. Saxton and Mortellite added 14 points apiece. The Huskies shot an impressive 28-of-55 (50.9%) from the field, and 10-of-19 (52.6%) from deep, but had 16 turnovers. Bloomsburg dominated the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Bald Eagles 37-26.
• Bloomsburg features a pair of talented freshmen this season in Elmore and Fofana. Elmore is second on the team in scoring (14.4 ppg) and is fifth in the PSAC in field goal percentage (54.8%). He also leads the team (tied for 15th in PSAC) in rebounding (7.3). Elmore reached double figures in scoring in his first 13 games this season and has accomplished the feat in 18 of his first 21 collegiate contests. Fofana, meanwhile, has been on a tear as of late and has started each of the last five games, averaging 19.6 points in those five starts. Fofana posts 11.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game - in just an average of 21.1 minutes - and has reached double figures in scoring in 12 of his last 15 games. Those figures translate to 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per 40 minutes. A third freshman,
William Melson (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) has started each of the last three games and is averaging 9.7 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.0 steals in those two starts.
• Saxton averages 9.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game which are both career highs. In addition, he averages 2.6 assists per game which is tied for 25th in the PSAC. Bloomsburg is also getting solid minutes from Mortellite who has started each of the last four games. After averaging 1.8 points over his first six games, Mortellite is averaging 9.3 points over his last eight. He has been in double figures in four of the last five games and is 15-of-31 (48.4%) from deep during the stretch.
• The Huskies are 10th in the PSAC in scoring offense (73.7) but are last in scoring defense (87.0). Shooting and turnovers have also been a struggle for Bloomsburg this season as it ranks 16th in turnover margin (-4.7), 12th in field goal percentage (43.4%), 16th in three-point percentage (30.2%), and last in free throw percentage (63.2%). Bloomsburg's rebounding is 12th in the league (-0.4).
• Bloomsburg has made at least one three-pointer in 229 consecutive games. The last time Bloomsburg did not make a three in a game was on December 4, 2010 in a 54-51 loss at Lock Haven when it went 0-7 from beyond the arc. Since adding Mortellite into heavy rotation on January 26, the Huskies have fared much better, going 38-of-99 (38.4%) over the last five games. The Huskies have hit at least seven threes in four of those contests.
