ALL-AMERICANS

Baseball | 6/4/2022 10:39:00 AM

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg University's Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) became the second Husky baseball player to pick up an All-American status this week, and the designated picked up two as he was named to the Second Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Third Team by the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Newbert joins fellow teammate Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) on the lists as the starting pitcher picked up his second All-American nod of the week by being named to the ABCA/Rawlings Second Team. Marshman was also named to the NCBWA's honorable mention.

Newbert picks up the accolade after hitting 22 home runs in 45 games and his .49 homers per game was tied for the third highest average in the country. In addition, Newbert shattered the program's single-season record for home runs and his 59 runs batted in were the second most ever hit by a Husky. The Bala Cynwyd, Pa. native ranks No. 2 all-time in career home runs (45) and RBI (169). Newbert led the team offensively in batting average (.348) and hit 16 doubles this year.

For Marshman, the Second Team All-American nod comes days after he earned a spot on the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Second Team.

This season, Marshman's 1.81 ERA was tied for the fourth lowest in the country and the right-hander struck out 71 hitters in 69.2 innings while allowing just 14 earned runs, nine walks and 69 hits all year. The Berwick, Pa. native's nine wins in 2022 are the third most in a single season in BU history. Only By Hopkins (10 wins, 1965) and Chad Arnold (12 wins, 1995) have recorded more wins in a single season.

Marshman will enter next season with 19 career wins, which is three shy of breaking Bloomsburg's all-time record. Marshman also currently ranks sixth on the all-time career strikeouts list.
