BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Bloomsburg wrestling picked up two statement victories at the bookends of the lineup but ultimately fell to Lock Haven, 32-12, on Thursday evening in MAC dual action.
The Huskies opened the dual with a strong start at 125 pounds as
Jace Schafer (Fairport, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) delivered six points with a first-period fall over Alex Reed at 2:13. Schafer struck quickly with an early takedown in the opening period before turning Reed to his back near the edge of the mat for a four-count near fall. Schafer stayed composed on top, working through multiple turns before securing the fall and giving Bloomsburg an early advantage.
Bloomsburg remained competitive through the middle of the dual, highlighted by a tightly contested bout at 165 pounds.
Braidon Woodward (Canisto-Greenwood, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) opened the match aggressively, earning a first-period escape to keep the score close early. Woodward chose bottom and earned an escape before Kunstek got two more takedowns and Woodward earned two escapes. Kunstek chose bottom and got a reversal to take an 11-4 lead. Woodward got his escape to cut the lead to 11-5. Despite limiting bonus-point opportunities and forcing full-period wrestling, Woodward ultimately dropped an 11-5 decision to Nick Kunstek.
The Huskies closed the night on a high note at heavyweight, where
Mason Rebuck (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) delivered a dramatic overtime victory over Kade Sottolano. Sottolano scored a takedown in the opening period before both wrestlers traded escapes and defensive stands through the first and second periods. Sottolano chose bottom and got a quick escape in the third period to take a 4-2 lead with short time in the match, but Rebuck stayed aggressive and got a takedown quickly to take a 5-4 lead. Sottolano answered with an escape to tie the match as time was winding down. With regulation ending tied, Rebuck stayed aggressive in sudden victory, converting a takedown with less than a minute in the period and working through the position to secure a fall at 8:05 and cap the dual with momentum.
