Sell earned seven letters for track and field and cross country at Bloomsburg. He won the Pennsylvania Conference Champion with record time in 1935 and was a place winner in every race during a three-year period. Following his graduation, Sell went onto coaching junior high basketball and varsity track and field. At Boyertown High School, he organized and coached, for 20 years, the first cross country and track and field programs at the school. Sell coached individuals to seven state high school championships, and his team won the medley relay title at the Penn Relays. Sell also helped organize the first Venzke Relay Carnival in 1939, which is still held annually.
