Richards was the first male swimmer to gain NCAA All-American honors in each of his four years of competition. He was named NCAA All-American six times in three different events. As a freshman he captured the PSAC crown in the 100 Butterfly and ended his career with top six finishes in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly in each of his four years. He served as team captain in 1979 and stayed on at the school to serve as a graduate assistant coach in 1980. Throughout his career, Wayne broke numerous team records in both butterfly events, the 200 IM and as a member of the 400 Medley, 400 and 800 Freestyle Relay teams. Wayne currently holds team records in the 200 Butterfly and 400 Freestyle Relay, marks that are now more than 20 years old.
