A three-time letter winner in wrestling for the Huskies, Russo won two Pennsylvania Conference titles and two Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) crowns. He was also a NAIA runner-up his junior year and finished sixth at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. As a senior, Russo won the NAIA title and finished fourth at the NCAA championships. That season, he was selected for the prestigious East-West All-Star Classic, where he helped the East team score a win. He was also the recipient of the Redman Award as the university's outstanding senior male athlete. He became Columbia University's head coach in 1973 and led the team to the Ivy League championship in 1980, '81 and '82.
