Welles was a four-year letter-winner in baseball and a three-time letter-winner in football for the Huskies. He was named the Underclassmen Athlete of the Year as a junior and won the Redman Award as the school's top senior athlete in 1975.

A two-time All-PSAC selection in both football and baseball, Welles led the NCAA Division III in punting in 1973 with a mark of 43.8 yards. That is still good for the 12th best mark in the division since 1973, a span of 29 years. Welles was also an all-conference selection as a defensive back and is the co-holder of the single-season interception mark at Bloomsburg with 10 in 1974.

On the baseball diamond, Welles hit .398 for his career with a homer and 27 RBI. In 1973 and 1974 he was named first team All-PSAC and was a second team selection in 1975 after missing eight games due to injury. He was team MVP in both 1973 and 1975.

Following his playing days at Bloomsburg, Welles punted and played defensive back for the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League, where he averaged 38.6 yards per kick in the 1975 season.
